WHITEFACE MOUNTAIN, N.Y. -- Bedford snowboarder Dan Genditzki won a gold medal in boardercross at the Empire State Games this past weekend.
The Empire State Games are a series of Olympic-style competitions utilizing all of the same venues as the 1980 Winter Olympics. More than 2,000 athletes compete annually in the winter games.
Genditzki entered in the open division of boardercross, which consists of groups of four people in a motocross-style starting gate. Once the gate drops, the snowboarder must navigate banked corners, jumps, step downs, rollers and other various obstacles. The first one down the course is the winner.
Genditzki practiced on banked slalom courses in Vail and Breckenridge, Colorado, a few weeks ago.
"I am happy with today's results.'' Genditzki said. "I had a great weekend of racing, followed by a snow shoe race Monday night where I placed second in my age group.''
Genditzki's last event will be winter bike racing, which consists of hybrid mountain bikes with wide tires used for the snow.
