Bonsell, CC 200 relay team qualify for states

UNIVERSITY PARK — Tyrone Area High School junior Lucas Bonsell was the lone individual champion from the Mirror coverage area on the first day of the District 6 Swimming Championships on Friday at the Penn State Natatorium.
Bonsell and the Central Cambria boys 200-yard medley relay team of junior Ethan Haycisak, seniors Tanner Braniff and Alex Burns, and freshman Giles Westrick punched their tickets to the state meet, held March 12-15 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, with first-place finishes.
Bonsell, seeded first in the Class 2A 100-yard butterfly, won the event in a time of 57.90 seconds, besting his seeded time of 59.64 and edging second-place finisher Dean Clark of Somerset by 0.69 seconds.
The Central Cambria boys won the Class 2A 200 medley relay by edging the Tyrone team of Isaac Yeskey, Patrick Van Kluenen, Bonsell and Owen Dunklebarger, 1:49.28 to 1:50.21. Haycisak, Braniff, Burns and Westrick lowered their seeded time by more than 4 seconds.
Gold medalists automatically earned spots in the state meet, and other swimmers can qualify later this weekend based on their district times against those from across the state.
Other area silver medalists in Class 2A included the Central Cambria girls 200 free relay team of Kathleen Hodge, Bryn Wandel, Jaycee Kleinstuber and Lindsey Hodge and the Tyrone boys 200 free relay team of Bonsell, Van Kluenen, Cameron Gallagher and Yeskey.
Class 3A silver medalists included Hollidaysburg’s Andrew Shanafelt in the boys 200 freestyle, Altoona’s Trevor Wilson in the boys 200 individual medley, Hollidaysburg’s Kaden Henderson in the boys 100 butterfly, the Hollidaysburg boys 200 medley relay team of Henderson, Charlie Pollock, Shanafelt and Caleb Myers, and the Hollidaysburg boys 200 free relay team of Henderson, Pollock, Myers and Draven Peters.
Bronze medalists included the Altoona girls 200 medley relay team of Charlie Kephart, Isabelle Wolford, Gracie Gioiosa and Sydney Hockenos and the Altoona girls 200 free relay team of Ella Heverly, Kephart, Lana Luke and Graycie Price in 3A, and Hollidaysburg’s Addison Smith in the girls 200 freestyle, Claysburg-Kimmel’s Alexys Tomlinson in the girls 200 IM, Haycisak in the boys 200 IM, Hollidaysburg’s Kara Neeley in the girls 50 freestyle, Central Cambria’s Hodge in the girls 100 butterfly and the Hollidaysburg girls 200 medley relay team of Neeley, Jackie Bevan, Marta Rebollo and Smith in 2A.
Events scheduled for Saturday are the 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay.
