CRESSON -- Tyrone junior Kyle Scott has been on a torrid pace early on in the wrestling season, taking full advantage of a new scoring system that rewards offensive attacks.
An owner of a 9-0 record, Scott has amassed four technical falls, three pins, a major decision and a forfeit win.
The top-seeded Scott dominated the 189-pound weight class of the Panther Holiday Classic at Mount Aloysius Classic, posting three pins, two technical falls and a major decision. Scott finished off his 6-0 weekend with a 17-2 throttling of Selinsgrove's third-seeded Ethan Miller in 4:13.
"That was awesome," Scott said. "I didn't expect that to happen, honestly. I didn't even know if I was going to win. I had a feeling that summer wrestling was going to pay off. The points just flowed there. It's all coming naturally for me.
"I've been working on trying to get my pace up. Instead of just drilling lousy in the wrestling room, me and Q (coach Quentin Wright) are getting after it. I'm just getting reps in, and it's starting to pay off."
Hollidaysburg, which tied with Fairfax, VA for 11th place, had three placewinners in fourth-placers Brayden Sidney (114) and Mitchell Baronner (172) and eighth-placer Landon Krupka (121).
"It's great for them," Hollidaysburg coach Christian Harr said. "When you come to a tournament with 52 teams, you want to perform well and you want to get to the podium. This is a good early-season tournament and a good test for us to see where we're at."
Central Cambria had two placers in third-placer Jake Wilson (152) and seventh-placer Burke Niebauer (127).
Penn Cambria had two medalists in Andrew Mardula (seventh, 160) and Isaac Filak (eighth, 145). Central's Thaide Mickel (145) placed seventh.
Scott placed third at 172 in last year's tournament, but there was no chance at beating him in this year's Panther Holiday Classic.
Miller defended Scott's first two takedown attempts in the first period, but Scott finally got a takedown with 23 seconds left in the period. The wrestlers traded reversals in the final 15 seconds for a 5-2 score going into the second.
In the second period, Scott escaped quickly, got a takedown with 41 seconds left and scored two nearfall points with a tilt right before the buzzer for an 11-2 lead. He quickly took Miller down to his back for six points to begin the third period to get the technical fall.
"Kyle had a great weekend," Wright. "He's wrestling confident. He's feeling good about his weight. He's really working on all the areas of his wrestling. The three-point takedowns are really helping him out because he's always been really good on his feet getting takedowns."
Scott yelled "Let's go" in celebration of his technical fall.
Scott is ranked sixth by PA Power Wrestling at 189, but he thinks he should be ranked higher.
"I pay attention (to the rankings)," Scott said, "and it just motivates me."
Wilson rolled into the semifinals with two pins and two major decisions before losing by technical fall, 15-0, to Perkiomen Valley's eventual champion Luke Knox.
He bounced back with a 1-0 win over Midd-West's Charley Page in the consolation semifinals and a 1-0 win over Canton's Carson Rockwell in the third-place bout.
"I think Jake wrestled really well," Central Cambria coach Matt Niebauer said. "He ran into a hammer there in the semifinals. That kid can wrestle. After that, he won a couple 1-0 matches. That's kind of what we want to be in. You don't learn what you need to work by tech-falling somebody. You learn by getting in those tight matches."
Baronner made the semifinals with four pins before losing to Armstrong's eventual champion Kaleb Kinzey, 6-3. He responded with his fifth pin before dropping a 4-1 decision to Tussey Mountain's Ezra Masood.
"He wrestled pretty solid all weekend," Harr said. "He had a bunch of falls leading up to his semifinals bout. He had a rematch from last year, was in the match the whole time. He gave up a takedown early and was kind of chasing coming back. He had some opportunities to score and just kind of fell short. It was the same thing in that third-place match."
Arment Waltenbaugh of The Hill School was voted the Outstanding Wrestler after beating former Bedford wrestler, returning Virginia state champion and three-time Panther Holiday Classic finalist Kaden Cassidy, 11-0.
Hollidaysburg's Aiden Schenk (160) and Rocco Cacciotti (215) and Glendale's Domanic Kaufman (133) won junior varsity titles. Claysburg-Kimmel's Trevor Brown (145), Glendale's Lawson Richards (215) and Bellwood-Antis' Jayce Quick (285) were second. Hollidaysburg's Tyler Rodgers (152) and Tyrone's Kayden Ansman (215) were third.
Snider wins girls title
In the girls tournament, Northern Bedford's returning state third-placer placer Raegan Snider went 2-0 and captured the 155-pound title with a pin of Selinsgrove's Alexis Stoneberg in 1:53.
Northern Bedford's returning state sixth-placer Kaylee Ebersole went 2-1 and finished second at 106 after getting pinned by Corry's Finley Fourspring in 1:23 in the finals.
Central Cambria's Emily Shetler (124) placed third, while Northern Bedford's Yasmin Miller (112) placed fourth.
