Local duo shine in track and field

LORETTO — Brooke Long and Vincent Franco recently had strong outings for the Saint Francis University indoor track and field team.

Competing at the Wagner College Seahawk Shootout in New York, Long, an Altoona graduate, and Franco, a Hollidaysburg graduate, finished with top 2 showings in their respective events.

Long, a junior, won the long jump with a leap of 5.56 meters. The mark puts her fourth all-time on the Red Flash top 10 list. She also ran the 60-meter dash and finished with a personal best 8.02.

Franco, a junior, competed in the weight throw, where he finished second with a throw of 16.53 meters. It puts him at No. 10 on the all-time list for the Red Flash.

Cranford honored

LORETTO — Juan Cranford Jr., a member of the Saint Francis men’s basketball team, has been named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for Dec. 16-22.

It is Cranford’s first weekly honor, and he became the 24th Red Flash player since 1997-98 to earn the distinction.

Cranford averaged 17.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, but what was even more impressive was that he shot 80.0 percent (20-for-25) from the field, 68.8 percent (11-for-16) from behind the arc and made both of his free throw attempts in three games for the Red Flash. The freshman started his week with a career-high 21 points against Maryland. Cranford then posted 13 points against Franciscan. Against Robert Morris, he finished the week with 19 points.

Cranford has recorded double figures in seven-straight games to become the first freshman under coach Rob Krimmel to do that. He currently is averaging 9.8 points per game and is shooting 53.2 percent from the floor.

Starting at $2.99/week.
