CRESSON -- Three wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area advanced to the semifinals of the 52-team Panther Holiday Classic on Friday at Mount Aloysius College.
Tyrone's top-seeded Kyle Scott (189), Hollidaysburg's third-seeded Mitchell Baronner (172) and Central Cambria's fifth-seeded Jake Wilson (152) all advanced to the semifinals.
The quarterfinal round was a rough one for area wrestlers in the tournament. Seven other area wrestlers lost in the round, but are still alive in the consolations.
The tournament resumes today with a junior varsity and girls round at 9:15 a.m. The fifth round of consolations (the blood round) for the boys is set for 10 a.m. The semifinals and consolation quarterfinals are at 11:45. The consolation semifinals will follow. The third, fifth and seventh-place bouts are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The championship finals will follow the parade of champions at 5 p.m.
Scott, who finished third in last season's Panther Holiday Classic, breezed to the semifinals with three first-period pins and a 15-0 technical fall in 50 seconds. Scott pinned Northern Bedford's Nolin Snider in 1:39 in the quarterfinals.
Scott will face Moshannon Valley's Rocco Reifer in the semifinals. Reifer recorded with two technical falls, a fall and a 7-2 win over Armstrong's Taye Bradshaw.
Baronner was even more dominant, posting four pins in four bouts, including one in 20 seconds and another in 25 seconds. He pinned McGuffey's Reid Teagarden in 4:14 in the quarterfinals.
Baronner will face Armstrong's seventh-seeded Kaleb Kinzey in the semifinals. Kinzey upset Tussey Mountain's second-seeded Ezra Masood, 1-0, the quarterfinals.
Wilson began with two pins before earning two major decisions, including an 11-2 win over Armstrong's Sam Jacobs in the quarterfinals.
McGuffey had a one-point lead, 109-108, over Hickory after the quarterfinals. Corry (105.5) and Penns Valley (102.5) were third and fourth, respectively. Hollidaysburg (83.5) was in ninth place.
