Lady Tigers’ Denis, Muriceak go 1-1 in doubles competition
HERSHEY — Hollidaysburg sophomores Crosby Denis and Grace Muriceak went 1-1 in Class 3A doubles action at the PIAA Tennis Championships at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday.
Denis and Muriceak won their first match, 6-0, 7-5, over Dallastown’s Lina Warrier and Mary Jane Moubarak and then fell to District 1 champions Michaelle Lerman and Anya Zuabenko of Council Rock South in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-0.
“This was a perfect way for Grace and Crosby to end a fantastic season,” Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. “We haven’t had a girls team come down here and win a match in quite some time. To make it as one of the final eight teams in the state is a tremendous accomplishment with the talent level at this tournament.”
Central’s doubles team of Zoe Grill and Kate Dunn fell to Masterman’s Rena Liu and Sophia Piastaras in the Class 2A first round, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
In the first round of Class 2A singles action, Central’s Julia Ritchey fell, 6-3, 6-3, to Lansdale Catholic’s Emerson Seigrath, and Chestnut Ridge’s Haley Hundley fell to Hughesville’s Sarah Buck, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Bedford’s Kasey Shuke and Sadie Livengood beat Hughesville’s Annaka Bruder and Georgia Randall, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, in Class 2A doubles, but then fell to Cathedral Prep’s Finleigh Handzel and Sophia Giance in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0.
Central Mountain’s Addison Lindsay beat Mechanicsburg’s Taryn Zerby, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of Class 3A singles and then beat District 1 champ Grace Piro, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals to advance to Saturday’s semifinals against Parkland’s Alexandria Warsing.
