PORTAGE -- Jacob McCoy pitched a complete-game two-hitter and struck out 10 to lead Portage to a 6-1 victory over Saint Joseph's in the first round of the District 6 Class 1A high school baseball playoffs.
"I feel good for him," Portage coach Larry McCabe said. "I feel good for these guys. There's a really good group here. We haven't had a great year record-wise. They don't miss practice. They work. They've got good attitudes, so I'm happy for them."
Connor Binaut had three hits, including a pair of doubles for the Mustangs, who will travel to second-seeded Blacklick Valley in the quarterfinals on Monday.
Trae Kargo added two hits and scored twice, and Tony Lawrence had a hit, walked twice and drove in two runs.
"We had some timely hitting," McCabe said. "Tony Lawrence had a big hit, a two-run single. Those things make a difference."

Carroll cruises
EBENSBURG -- Cullen Myers had four hits, and Jacob Gregg held Penns Manor to just one run and three hits in Bishop Carroll's 16-1, four inning, win in the first round of the District 6 Class 1A baseball playoffs.
The Huskies will play at third-seeded Glendale on Monday.
Luke Repko added three hits for Bishop Carroll.

Heights ousted
WINGATE -- Carson Lobick hit a solo home run, but that was Cambria Heights' only hit in a 5-1 loss to defending PIAA Class 2A champion Bald Eagle Area in the quarterfinals of the District 6 Class 2A high school baseball playoffs.
Garrett Jasper allowed just five hits on the mound for the Highlanders, but the Eagles made the most of their opportunities.
"I'm proud of the overall effort from our guys today, showing up and competing against one of the top teams in the state like they did," Cambria Heights coach Josh Bracken said. "We got a quality starting pitching performance from Jasper. He was able to pitch to contact effectively and miss barrels. Unfortunately for us they were able to execute and capitalize on a few errors and soft contact at times, making us pay and plating runs when they needed them, so credit to them for playing a clean game in all three phases."
Carson Nagle had a two-run double for the Eagles, and Weston McClain struck out nine and allowed just Lobick's home run.
"I thought maybe with the Lobick solo shot there in the fifth to make it 2-1, it would spark us into something but it just wasn't in the cards for us," Bracken said. "They did a nice job pushing some insurance runs across in the bottom half of the fifth and sixth, executing at the plate and capitalizing with runners in scoring position, good teams do that."
BEA will host Mount Union, a 1-0 winner over Richland in another quarterfinal, in the semifinals next Thursday. Heights finished 10-8.
"Again, super proud of this group and how they competed today," Bracken said. "Bald Eagle is a well-established program, and for us, snapping a playoff drought and showing up with a mentality to compete to win -- it's a program step in the right direction at macro level."
