Latrobe leaves town with tourney trophy

7 min read

The Latrobe baseball team scored a run in the third inning and it held up in the end as the Wildcats beat Williamsburg, 1-0, in the Curve Invitational semifinals Friday at PNG Field.

Latrobe (14-4) got an RBI hit from Louis Amatucci that scored Cooper Basciano. Amatucci finished with two hits, as did teammate Brody Rumon.

Williamsburg (6-7) came into the game fresh off an upset of Philipsburg-Osceola during first-round action on Thursday. The Blue Pirates, who finished with five hits -- all singles -- left six runners on base.

Williamsburg pitched two freshmen who combined to keep Latrobe in check on just six hits. William Lower started, went five innings and was charged with the run on three hits. He struck out three and walked three. Ethan Reffner worked two innings in relief. He gave up three hits and did not walk a batter.

Latrobe came back late Friday night to beat Fannett-Metal, 9-1, in the final. F-M beat Claysburg-Kimmel, 18-7, in the other semifinal game early Friday.

In the semifinal round, Fannett-Metal scored eight runs in the third and five in the sixth to get an 18-7 mercy-rule win over Claysburg-Kimmel.

The Bulldogs (6-8) got three hits and two RBIs from Mason Campagna to go with three hits and an RBI from Zach Campagna. Teammate Landon Douglas added two hits and an RBI.

Fannett-Metal (11-3) got three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs from Daxton Detweiler.
