Lady Lions show fight in season-ending loss

By Dominic Reed 2 min read

LEWISTOWN -- The Mifflin County softball team hosted Altoona in a District Class 6A semifinal contest on Thursday.

The Huskies came out victorious for a 15-8 win over the Mountain Lions.

Husky starting pitcher Piper Specht tossed a complete game, and Ava Baker belted a home run in her fourth at-bat.

Alaina Sharp went 3-for-3 and was a home run shy of the cycle. Mifflin County's hitting was contagious as multiple Husky hitters were on their A-game.

"We will take a win when we can get it. When you don't win, your season is over, give a tip of a cap to Altoona. They hit the ball well tonight," Huskies coach Craig Weston said.

Alaina Sharp said her coaches are a big reason why she's been successful.

"I really went with my coaches. They really help me improve. It's all about mindset. They really tell me to keep working on it," Sharp said.

The Huskies had seven runners cross home plate in the fifth inning.

Despite the loss, Altoona is looking on the bright side heading into next season.

"I think going into next year we are really excited," Altoona coach Alyssa Fasolo said. "We are very young with only one senior and two juniors on varsity. We're very excited going into next year. Toward the end of the game, we played with grit, and we had a big inning and stayed with it."

Lion Jayda Yost added that Altoona has to be motivated.

"Our team can hit big. We just need to really motivate ourselves," Yost said. "I was really motivated by my catcher Kaya Sprankle. It really motivated me (to see her perform)."

The Huskies are now 11-8 and will play in the 6A title game next week. Altoona finished the year 1-17.
