Altoona Mountain Lion Classic: Class 3A: Altoona girls earn multiple first places

The Altoona girls track and field team has put together a stellar, well-balanced season, and that continued Friday night at the Altoona Mountain Lion Track & Field Classic when the Lady Lions claimed the Class 3A team championship, 169-125, over rival State College at Mansion Park.

Altoona also won four individual girls events and two relays.

"I was really happy with how they performed today," Altoona coach Paula Foreman said. "Our goal obviously is to win districts and get as many kids as we can to the state meet. We are always having those conversations. The girls have been focused and improving their times, marks, throws and jumps every time we have been out. We're doing it in all events. That's the benefit of where we are as a team. We're scoring and contending in pretty much all events. I can't give credit to our girls enough. One of our slogans is, 'who do you want to be today?' and we drive that home, trying to be better than yesterday."

Senior star Hailey Kravetz, who already owned the school's record in the 300-meter hurdles entering the season, has been improving on that mark and did so again with a championship Friday in 45.37 seconds.

"I have been really consistent this year," Kravetz said. "I have been running faster times than I ever did last year, so that's always a good indicator of peaking at the right time. I just ran my fastest time all season, so it's just a matter of getting prepared for districts and states. I definitely want to go sub-45 at districts, get my own record and dip into the 43s at states."

Kravetz got emotional when reflecting on her final stretch of events as an Altoona athlete.

"It has come quicker than I expected it to," Kravetz said. "It's crazy that we're already here. I'm just taking in every minute and using every opportunity I get to run with my friends one last time."

Other Altoona girls individual winners included Sage Bower in the pole vault when she cleared 9 feet, 6 inches, Mary Stoltz in the 800 in 2:17.26 and Kihlee Noel in the shot put with a throw of 36-8.5.

The Altoona girls 3200 relay won in 9:40.25, a new season best, and the 1600 relay won in 4:02.77.

The Altoona boys, who finished third behind champion State College and runner-up Hollidaysburg, also had three winners.

Senior Bron Mosley won the shot put with a throw of 57-3, but he's hoping a longer throw is yet to come.

"I have been doing a bunch of drilling at practice, and I have set a goal for myself. I'm sitting here hungry trying to get it," Mosley said. "The school record is 58 (feet) and a quarter inch, set by Mike Reid in 1965, so I have been hammering for that."

Mosley recently switched techniques, and it has helped him reach longer distances.

"You have to get your power position down, and then it depends on where you want to go from there," Mosley said. "The glide is something that is easier to get the hang of, but it doesn't have that much potential, or you can start spinning and get an early head start on it, that gives you a higher ceiling. I started out gliding, but then I realized I kind of reached my max at gliding. This year, I started spinning. I have been very fortunate with it."

Altoona's Xavier Williams won the 110 hurdles in 14.62, well ahead of runner-up Jackson Hersh of South Western's time of 15.37, but Williams was frustrated because he also has bigger goals.

"It definitely wasn't the best," Williams said. "My start was horrible. I had no time to warm up, because I was at jumps. Hopefully by the end of the year, I'm at 14.2 or maybe even a 13.9. I have to work on my start and holding the same speed and position the whole race."

Senior Josh Corso claimed the high jump event, clearing 6-2, and topping his closest competitors by two inches.

Hollidaysburg also took home some championship plaques.

Caden DeLattre won the triple jump in 45-9 over Williams (44-7.75) and broke his own school record in winning the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 1 inch.

"I felt really good and had the wind with me," DeLattre said. "That definitely helped a little bit, and the atmosphere is always great here. I knew I had to do something big here, and I felt great going into the long jump. I executed pretty well. I always jump well here too. It feels really good to take two first places home, especially in a big meet like this. But I scratched a 24 today, so if I can hit that going into states, I'll feel pretty good."

Other Hollidaysburg winners included Isaac Yarnell (who won the 200 dash in 22.15 and was the runner-up in the 100 dash) and Wyatt Maines, who won the discus with a throw of 146 feet, 8 inches.

Mifflin County's Myka Simmons, who edged Yarnell in the 100 dash, was selected as the 3A boys Coach Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer, and DuBois distance runner Morgan Roemer was picked as the 3A girls winner after setting a new meet record in the mile.

Two new awards were the Mike Adams 200-Meter Dash Award that went to 2A champion Josh Stolarski of Penn Cambria and 3A champion Yarnell. The other award was the Bethany Lender Triple Jump Award which went to 2A champion Hayden Mark of Huntingdon and 3A champion Lily Hendricks of Central Mountain.

Adams and Lender were both Altoona track athletes who went on to be successful Division I collegiate track athletes. Adams also coached Altoona for many years following his career.

"It means a lot to honor our past athletes," Foreman said. "Because that's what makes our program, historically, as good as it has been. We have had some good athletes come through our program and to honor Mike for all he gives back to this program is nice. He was a very instrumental part of our team, and Bethany was as well. It means a lot to us, and I hope it means a lot to the athletes that won the awards."

The Blair County Outstanding Performer Awards, presented in honor of Cindy Gutzwiller were given to Mosley and Triumph Kilmartin of Altoona and Aubree Waksmonski and Caden DeLattre of Hollidaysburg.
