Altoona Mountain Lion Classic: Class 2A: Dickinson, Stolarski earn multiple first places

Kole Dickinson’s day did not start off well at Friday’s Altoona Mountain Lion Track & Field Classic.

During qualifying for the Class 2A boys 110-meter hurdles, another hurdler tripped and collided with the Bellwood-Antis senior and seemed to derail his chances to compete in the final.

“After the first few hurdles, we were locking elbows,” Dickinson said. “He tripped me up, and all of a sudden I see him in front of the next hurdle in front of me and the hurdle. I had to jump over him and the next hurdle, and that screwed everything up.”

But as the dejected Dickinson began walking off, he got a reprieve. Meet officials decided to re-run Dickinson’s qualifying heat.

“I went back and got my stuff and was walking back to our tent,” Dickinson said. “My coach called me and told me to come back down. I’m so relieved and happy I got a second chance.”

Dickinson took full advantage of his new life, winning the 110 hurdles in 15.53 seconds, and later he won the 300 hurdles in 40.74.

“I’m really happy, especially after getting two wins Monday (at the B-A Invitational), it feels really good,” Dickinson said. “I’m happy with my times. I’m hoping to get under 40, and I’m excited for the Laurel Highlands meet.”

Another athlete that will be competing at that LHAC meet was one of the biggest stars at Friday’s meet.

Penn Cambria’s Josh Stolarski won the 100 dash in 11.05, the 400 in 49.55 and then the 200 in 22.16.

“I’m glad to have swept my three races, but my times were subpar for what I wanted,” Stolarski said. “I really wanted the meet record for the 200. I ran under it earlier this season. My 400 was probably my worst of the season in my eyes. The 100 was solid, but to come away with all three is special. I’m probably the first guy in Penn Cambria history to do so. Writing history is fun.”

Stolarski also made history by being named the Coach Bill Reimer Class 2A Outstanding Performer.

Though, he wished he could have been in the 3A competition to receive more of a push from his competition.

“It’s very difficult, because I’m a chaser,” Stolarski said. “If there’s not someone in front of me, I’m not going to run as fast as I could. I feel like if I was in the 3A for the 100, I would have broken 100, and if I was in the 3A race for the 200, I would have ran under 22. It’s the circumstances and the school I go to, but I control what I can control, so back to the drawing board.”

In that 200 dash, Central’s Jack Dunn pulled a hamstring and did not finish. Dunn’s absence likely impacted the team title as he was still competing in the high jump as well. Bellefonte edged Central for the boys 2A title, 67-63. Central won the 400-meter relay in 44.3, holding off a charge from Ligonier Valley down the final stretch.

Stolarski’s Penn Cambria teammate, Carter McDermott, won the triple jump in 44-0.5 and the long jump in 22-1.5.

Another area winner on the boys side was Juniata Valley’s Bryce Weirich, who captured the pole vault title by clearing 13 feet.

“My football coach, (Bill) Musser told me my freshman year that I should do pole vault,” Weirich said. “He thought I would be good at it, and I guess he was right. I have been able to move up with new poles through the years, and I have had help from my coaches to keep me going. It felt awesome to win. My goal is 13-4, because that will beat the school record. I need to get on some bigger poles and go up straighter and higher.”

On the girls side, Portage’s Cami Burkett staked her claim to the dash championships going forward with titles in the 100 and 200. Burkett just missed the time she was looking for in the 200 with a time of 26.05, a new Portage school record.

“I’m glad, but it’s so frustrating, because I’m always so close to breaking 26,” Burkett said. “It’s always so close, but it just never happens. I’m happy, but a little frustrated still.”

Burkett topped Tyrone’s Rebecca Lewis to win both dashes.

“The (other runners) are great sprinters too,” Burkett said. “With sprints, it just depends on who has a good day. It’s been a long day. This helps, but it’s still going to be tough, I’m sure.”

Lewis did win the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 4.5 inches.

Sarah McConnell of River Valley won the high jump, 300 hurdles and the 400 dash and finished fifth in the long jump and was named the Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer in 2A girls.

Huntingdon’s Tyler Radar broke the 800-meter run meet record that had stood since 1999 with a time of 1:55.05.

The Blair County Outstanding Performer Awards, presented in honor of Cindy Gutzwiller were given to Hayden Settler and Braden Reilly of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic, Macy Norris and Jeremiah Ross of Williamsburg, Lewis and Brady Ronan of Tyrone, Delaney Hall and Jack Dunn of Central and Chloe Hammond and Dickinson of Bellwood-Antis.
