Tyrone’s Lewis, others will have to wait on Invite finals

BELLWOOD -- Tyrone senior Rebecca Lewis enjoyed encouraging results at Monday's annual Bellwood-Antis Invitational, even though she'll have to wait on her official time in the 200-meter dash.
Lewis won the 100 dash in 12.69 and won the 200 convincingly, but as she was waiting for her official time, she was informed of a clock malfunction and a delay.
That delay in results unfortunately wasn't the only one in an Invitational that nine events still did not have official results for when coaches were sent home without ribbons or awards being presented around 9:45 p.m.
"I just wanted to make sure it was fair to the kids," Bellwood-Antis boys track and field coach Nick Lovrich said. "We had some really great performances, and not everybody got a chance to see the results because we didn't have live results going because of a technical glitch. I wanted to make sure it was fair for the kids and that the deserving kids got the awards."
The results for the boys 1600, 3200, 1600 relay, triple jump and pole vault were not official by the time coaches left nor were the girls 200, 100 hurdles, 1600 relay or discus.
The Outstanding Performer Awards for male and female athletes, named this year and going forward for Bob Fowler and Miss R for Julia Roseborough, were not awarded nor was the team title. The plan is to still present all the awards, but at a later date after everything can be checked for validity.
"We have to make sure the ribbons are correct also," Lovrich said. "Those kids who were in the top six positions will get those ribbons."
Lewis was one of the top performers at Monday's event and topped senior rival Maddie Hopsicker of Juniata Valley for the second time in the last week.
"It feels great," Lewis said. "I was seeded second in the 100 behind a girl I have been back and forth with last year and this year (Hopsicker), so it was kind of cool to really start being consistently ahead there."
Lewis won the 400 dash District 6 title as a sophomore but has transitioned her focus to the shorter sprints the last two seasons.
"I started seeing more progress in the 200 and the 100 when I started those," Lewis said. "Last year, we just decided to focus on those, and I did pretty well at districts. I'm not missing running the 400."
Neither Hopsicker or Portage's Cami Burkett will be at the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference meet, but Lewis considers them her top competitors once the District 6 championships roll around.
"I'd like to see a low 26 for my 200, and it would be nice to see a low 12 for my 100," Lewis said. "At districts I'm going to see Maddie Hopsicker and Cami Burkett and I'll have a challenge with those two."
Bellwood-Antis hurdler Kole Dickinson also impressed on Monday by winning both the 110 and 300 hurdles. His time in the 110 was 15.53, and he set a new PR in the 300 at 40.58.
"I was seeded second in both hurdles coming in, so it feels pretty good," Dickinson said. "Especially with it being our last home meet here in my senior year. I just wanted to go out there and run my hardest race."
Dickinson topped fellow top LHAC hurdlers Robert Long-Yarrison of Central and A.J. Koontz of Bedford. Koontz withdrew from the 300 hurdles with an injury.
"I definitely want to try and place high, since it's our first year in the Laurel Highlands," Dickinson said. "I think after what I ran today, I have a good chance."
Tyrone's Brady Ronan won the long jump in 20-9.75 and was second in the 100 dash. Northern Cambria's Michael Konitsky won both the 100 and 400 dash but was edged by Central's Jack Dunn in the 200 dash. Dunn had a time of 22.87.
Central Cambria's boys team won a pair of throwing championships.
Christian Vasil won the shot put for the Red Devils with a throw of 48-1, and Dom Micco won the discus with a throw of 129-9.
Tyrone senior Bree Paul continued a recent hot streak by topped Bedford's Autumn Becker and winning the 300 hurdles in 47.46.
"I set the school record in the 300 hurdles, and we also set the school record in the 400 relay (earlier this year)," Paul said. "This year, I really put most of my focus into the 300. I have been practicing the 300 a lot at practices, and my coaches have played a huge role in that too."
Becker led for most of the race before Paul caught her before the final hurdle.
"It felt pretty good to beat her," Paul said. "She also had a really good race today, and when I was coming around the turn, I wasn't sure I was going to catch her."
Central's Alayna Mingle won the shot put in 32-6, and Central Cambria girls' team opened the Invitational by winning the 3200-meter relay in 10:11.22.
