Tigers, Lions both pick up two wins

The Hollidaysburg Area High School boys tennis team improved to 9-0 on Saturday with wins over Selinsgrove and Shikellamy, both by 5-0 scores at the Summit Tennis and Athletic Club.

Against the Seals, the Tigers got singles wins from Ben Johnson, Garrett Bouchard and Michael Waibel to go with doubles victories from Yvan Chen-Felix Xu and Alex Arbogast-Jacob Sidney. Against the Braves, Hollidaysburg got singles wins from Bouchard, Waibel and Xu, along with doubles wins from Arbogast-Sidney and Chen-Aamir Azad.

Lions triumph

Altoona evened its season record at 5-5 on Saturday, winning its matches with Selinsgrove and Shikellamy, both by scores of 5-0, in high school boys tennis.

In singles play against the Seals, Altoona got wins from Luke Mitchell, Josh Adams and Brady Sassano. The doubles teams of Aiden Aiken and Avery Lanzendorfer, along with Sean Ratchford and Leim King-Settles, both triumphed.

Against the Braves, Mitchell, Adams and Sassano again swept singles play, while in doubles play, Aiken and Lanzendorfer along with Max Chile-Jackson Whitaker each earned victories.

Top five for AAHS

DERRY -- The Altoona Area High School boys volleyball team competed in the 16-team Derry Invitational on Saturday and wound up placing fifth.

The Mountain Lions opened pool play beating Conneaut Valley (15-12-15-6) while splitting with North Allegheny (15-6, 13-15). In pool play, Altoona lost to Mars (25-21, 25-22), Penn-Trafford (25-22, 25-21) and Derry (25-20, 25-18).

The Mountain Lions came back through the play-in round to defeat Central 25-16.

In the quarterfinals, Altoona was eliminated by North Allegheny, 25-12.

Caleb Fries led Altoona with 24 kills and eight aces to go with 22 kills and nine digs fro Noah Fries. Sam Kessinger totaled 62 assists and 16 digs while Nino Yohn added 14 digs and Lukas Weathersbee 14 kills.

Before competing against Altoona, the Scarlet Dragons opened with a 15-8,15-6 to Penn Trafford and a 15-8, 15-8 loss to Latrobe.

In pool play, Conneaut beat Central 25-12, 25-13. Central also lost to Fox Chapel (25-19, 25-21) and West Shamokin (25-13, 25-19.

Hayden Smith led the Dragons with nine kills and seven blocks to go with Christian Heuston's six kills and eight blocks. Bryson Brooks added 13 digs and eight kills to go with 25 assists from Logan Hummel.

In the JV Tournament, Altoona made it to the Silver finals where it lost to Latrobe, 27-25. In the semifinals, Altoona downed Mars, 25-20.

In pool play, Altoona lost to Shaler (25-13, 27-25) and split with Derry (19-25, 25-23) and Penn Trafford (25-23, 18-25).

Tigers split

BELLEFONTE -- The Hollidaysburg Area High School softball team split a twinbill with Bellefonte on Saturday, winning the opener, 11-10, while falling in the nightcap, 5-0.

In the Lady Tigers victory, Sydney Shay had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs to go with four hits and two RBIs from Maria Malone.

Teammate AJ Good added two hits and two RBIs in a game Hollidaysburg led, 11-6 after five innings.

In the 5-0 loss, the Lady Tigers were held to just three hits, two singles and a double by Good. Malone, who got the loss, struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

She gave up eight hits in six innings. Three of the five runs were earned.
