Last season, Hollidaysburg's Caden DeLattre set the Golden Tigers' school record in the triple jump with a mark of 45 feet, 9 inches.
Fast forward to Saturday's 47th annual Altoona Igloo Invitational at Mansion Park, DeLattre stepped to the runway once again and topped that mark again...by nearly one foot.
His new mark is now 46 feet-7§ inches.
"It was a pretty cool jump. It was my last one and I knew who was ahead of me. I knew I had to get a big jump," DeLattre said. "It was all adrenaline. Even though I was behind (the board) I still just tried to soar and finish that jump. If I keep getting better the way I've been, I think I can definitely place pretty high at states."
That mark beat out Altoona's Xavier Williams, who registered a 46-foot, 3-inch attempt. DeLattre also finished fourth in the long jump at 21 feet,
Because of the nature of the meet, no formal team scores were kept.
The boys high jump competition finished in a three-way tie between Sam Lundeen of Kane, Altoona's Josh Corso and Hollidaysburg's Nathan Grabill, who all cleared the 6-foot mark. Lundeen, though, ended up winning the top spot followed by Corso and Grabill.
"I know what I have to work with. I know what I have to do. I just couldn't execute today," Grabill said. "I know I'm still up there with them."
On the girls' side of the meet, there were a couple of occasions where much like the boys' high jump, close calls were the difference in who took home the top spot in an event.
Altoona senior Haley Kravetz just missed out on the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles by less than one-tenth of a second (15.7) to State College's Sarah Tate (15.61)
"I (didn't have my) best 100 final," she said. "I had a PR for the season, so that's always a good indicator."
Kravetz' shot at redemption went smoother during the 300-meter hurdles as she won by nearly 1¢ seconds over Tate (46.5 to 47.9).
"I knew I wanted to get out fast because that's the worst part of the race and the wind's not with me on that backstretch," she said. "I knew just to keep my head down. I felt pretty far ahead of everyone so I wanted to keep my pace knowing it would be harder as I got the last hurdle."
Saturday was a strong afternoon for Lady Lion junior Triumph Kilmartin, who walked away with a first-place finish in the high jump as she cleared the 5-foot-2 mark. She is excited to be back after dealing with a sprained neck last season.
"I just think consistency in my approach and listening to my coach, and just staying out of my head helps a lot," Kilmartin said of her success. "I normally try to back up on some of my approaches when my legs are a lot warmer. As it gets warmer out, I'm going to have to push harder and that will change my approach for sure."
She registered a pair of second-place finishes in the long and triple jump.
Other area winners were Altoona's Bron Mosley (shot), Mary Stoltz (800), Kihlee Noel (shot) and Annalyse Yost (javelin), and Hollidaysburg's Isaac Yarnell (100).
