AAHS grad shines in classroom, too

Altoona Area High School graduate Adalynn Cherry, a Washington & Jefferson College basketball player, earned 2023-24 Academic All-District Basketball honors from the College Sports Communicators.

Cherry holds a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in Economics and Spanish with Minors in Business Administration and Computing & Information Studies. Cherry ranked second in the PAC in assist/turnover ratio and fifth in assists (3.5 per game).

In addition, the junior guard averaged 8.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Cherry earned All-PAC Second Team honors following the season.

This is the second-straight year that Cherry earned Academic All-District honors from the CSC.

Jordyn Burkey, a member of the IUP women's swimming and diving team, recently was named to the 2023-24 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.

Burkey, an Early Childhood-Special Education major, is a graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School.

To qualify for the CSC Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically, maintain a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA and compete in at least four competitions during the season.

The UPJ baseball team is 13-13 so far this season with a 4-4 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. They are 6-3 at home and 7-10 on the road.

Area players competing on the team include Altoona's Lucas Muffie, Erik Rhodes and Aidan Steinbugl, Central's Devon Boyles, Glendale's Austin Hammerle and Tyrone's Rodney Shultz.
