Lady Tiger records 18 strikeouts in leading team to victory

HOLLIDAYSBURG-- Maria Malone struck out 18 of 21 batters, giving up just two hits with only one walk as the Hollidaysburg softball team opened the season with a 2-1 win over Bellwood-Antis Tuesday in high school action.

The lone run the senior Malone gave up was unearned.

Offensively, Hollidaysburg, down 1-0 at the time, scored twice in the sixth for the win. Sydney Shay homered and Hallee Chandler added a solo RBI effort.

Bellwood-Antis, also playing its opener, got two hits and an RBI from London McKee. Pitcher Palynn Gregg gave up four hits, two earned runs with four strikeouts and five walks.

LOYSBURG -- Northern Bedford collected 12 hits and every Lady Panther in the lineup reached base safely in a season-opening 15-2 win in five innings over McConnellsburg in high school softball.

Lacy McIllnay had two hits and drove in four runs, while teammate Miranda Brown added a two-run homer.

Winning pitcher Lindsey Bolinger struck out two and walked three while scattering six hits.

MOUNT UNION -- Claysburg-Kimmel jumped out to a 6-3 after three innings en route to a 13-3 victory in six innings over Mount Union in high school softball.

McKenna Black had three hits and three RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs. Winning pitcher Emalee Cavender had three hits and went the distance, striking out nine with one walk while scattering six hits over seven innings.

Tennis

The Hollidaysburg boys tennis team improved its record to 3-0 Tuesday afternoon, defeating Clearfield, 5-0, in high school action at the Summit Tennis & Athletic Club.

The Golden Tigers got singles victories out of Garrett Bouchard, Michael Waibel and Yvan Chen. The doubles teams of Jacob Sidney and Alex Arbogast, and Noah Kanish and William Zhu, also earned victories.

Clearfield fell to 1-2, and it was the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference opener for the Tigers..

Baseball

LOYSBURG -- The Northern Bedford baseball team opened its season with a 4-3 loss to McConnellsburg in high school action.

The Panthers, who scored twice in the third to tie the game up at 3-3, got two hits from Noah Kochara while Wesley Horsh added a solo RBI effort. Northern, which out-hit McConnellsburg 6-4, was hurt by five errors in the game.
