Cuevas, Ebersole, Snider earn regional titles

MILTON -- Being one of three girls on Bellwood-Antis's girls wrestling team, and one of two remaining in the postseason, sophomore Juliette Cuevas felt she needed to represent her school.

Heading into Saturday's PIAA Central Girls Regional Tournament, the lightweight Cuevas wanted to put Bellwood on the map.

Cuevas won four consecutive matches from Saturday morning through the evening to capture her first-ever regional title at 100 pounds in the PIAA's inaugural tournament. Two of Cuevas's four victories came by fall, both being on their way to the championship rounds.

"Honestly, I think for Bellwood this is the best thing that could have happened," Cuevas said. "For a girl to go out and show up as a first year, I think this is the most amazing accomplishment I've ever had. I really want to place in states and I've had a great time. These girls were tough, and they gave me the shove that I needed to show them what I needed to do."

Northern Bedford's Kaylee Ebersole and Raegan Snider also won individual titles. Bishop McCort finished fourth in the team standings and Northern Bedford in seventh, while Bellwood finished 19th.

"I placed third in districts but today I really showed up. I really want to show everyone what Bellwood has," Cuevas said.

Cuevas brought up districts not as a way to point herself down, but upwards. The second-year wrestler made strides from competing with boys one year ago to placing third at districts and finally winning a regional title.

The elusive title run was capped when Cuevas defeated Moshannon Valley's Autumn Shoff in a 10-6 decision. Cuevas was no stranger to Shoff, who had beaten her in the district semifinals one week prior. With more experience and coaches to fuel her in the corner, Cuevas was ready for the test.

Cuevas took control early on in the match with the first takedown, but after penalty points set her back, Shoff used that momentum to take control with two near-fall points which gave her a 4-2 advantage. Cuevas then regained her footing with a reversal and with the score tied at 4-4 took control in the final period. Cuevas scored three takedowns while giving up just two escapes to close out the revenge match.

"I was beaten by her at districts. She placed first and I was nervous to go out there," Cuevas explained. "I knew what she was going to do this time. Talking to my coaches, they just told me not to tie up, to take my shots and I think if I wouldn't have listened to them I would've lost."

The journey may have looked easy to anyone peeking at the bracket, but Cuevas earned her medal and a right atop the podium. As a No. 9 seed in the lightest bracket, Cuevas battled in one of the four preliminary rounds. She skated through that with a pin in 56 seconds after getting a first period takedown.

As the competition stiffened up the next round, Cuevas didn't back down. She gutted out an 8-7 decision after taking a 5-0 lead early on but due to penalties, let Mia Gifford of Western Wayne back into the match. Cuevas then countered with one final takedown to advance to the semifinals, where she stiffed Danica Bacorn of Williamsport with a fall in 3 minutes, 53 seconds.

Cuevas went out and dominated the match when she took a 7-0 lead with five near-fall points and a takedown before eventually getting ahead, 9-0 before the fall.

"Honestly, with the boys being so much stronger than I am, you're used to the strength the boys have,'' Cuevas said. "These girls are strong, they really are, but being so used to the boys it's just nothing to you."

Staying confident

As a No. 1 seed, Northern Bedford's Ebersole admitted that Saturday's regional tournament was a little overwhelming.

It didn't appear that way, though, as Ebersole crushed the bracket with back-to-back pins--both in under 90 seconds--to earn a spot in the championship and solidify a berth to states. Ebersole sweetened that with a pin in 1 minute, 12 seconds against Anna Lackey of State College to win her first Girls Central Regional Championship at 106 pounds.

"It feels pretty good. At the beginning I was kind of scared but once it got toward the end it was fine," Ebersole said.

Snider (155) claimed a regional title and will join Ebersole in Hershey on Thursday. Snider had three consecutive pins from the morning quarterfinal to her final, which she earned in 1 minute, 38 seconds.

Ebersole's first pin came in just over one minute (1:02). And as competition continued to rise as rounds furthered, Ebersole stuck with the falls and picked up her second consecutive fall in 1 minute, 28 seconds after a quick takedown.

By the time finals rolled around, after a four-hour layoff and a matchup with No. 6 Lackey was bound, Ebersole didn't flinch and took initiative with the first takedown before earning a pin. Ebersole may have had nerves running through her body, but she knew if she wanted to make the inaugural PIAA State Tournament that a strong performance was needed.

"Since it's close to states, I want to have a good state placing," Ebersole said when asked what helped her confidence as the tournament moved on.

Fouse dominates

Jordyn Fouse has been one of Bishop McCort's phenom wrestlers over the past two seasons and proved it at the PIAA Regional tourney.

The No. 1 seed dominated the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds with consecutive pins into the finals. Fouse ran into No. 2 seed Sara Shook of Western Wayne in the final, but made the victory look smooth by winning a 20-4 tech fall in just under three minutes.

"It feels unreal, it's still sinking in to have a PIAA medal around my neck," Fouse, a former Northern Bedford student, said after the title win. "It's an amazing feeling, I'm taking it one tournament at a time. It's sometimes hard to not look ahead and look at the big picture. I'm focusing on regionals and winning this and leaving for states on Wednesday. I'm really excited."

McCort's Alyssa Favara (190) also claimed a regional title while Lane Fordyce (112) finished runner-up as both move on to states.

Violet Lasure of Chestnut Ridge won the 142-pound regional title.
