NORTH HUNTINGDON - The Altoona Area High School boys volleyball team competed in the Norwin Tournament on Saturday where it finished in third place out of the 17 schools in the event.
Altoona made it to the semifinal round against host Norwin where it lost, 25-18.
Altoona opened up pool play by going 3-1, beating Trinity (25-11), McKeesport (25-22) and Penn Hills (25-21) while losing to Bethel Park (25-19).
In the second round of play, Altoona split with Hempfield (16-25, 25-22) and South Fayette (22-25, 25-22). In the quarterfinals, Altoona defeated West Shamokin 25-23 before falling to Norwin.
Caleb Fries led Altoona with 34 kills and 10 digs while Lukas Weathersbee had 17 kills and 12 digs to go with 14 kills and 12 digs from Noah Fries. Sam Kessinger contributed 60 assists and 22 digs to go with 22 digs from Nino Yohn.

AAHS JVs in action
MEADVILLE -- The Altoona JV team took part in the Meadville Tournament where it was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
In pool play, Altoona split with Saegertown (20-25, 25-16) while losing to Northeastern (25-6, 25-9) and Meadville (25-10, 25-7). In the first round of playoffs, Altoona lost 25-17 to Erie McDowell.
Lady Pirates win
WILLIAMSBURG -- The Williamsburg softball team jumped out to an 8-1 lead after three innings en route to a 10-2 win over Ferndale in a high school game from Friday.
Winning pitcher Kara Lansbury struck out 16, walked one and scattered five hits while giving up two earned runs. She also helped out her own cause with two hits and four RBIs.
Raina Alexander added three hits and scored twice to go with two RBIs and two runs scored from Billy Harnish.
