UNIVERSITY PARK -- Four-time PIAA state champion Leah Shackley will be competing in the District 6 Swimming Championships this weekend at the Penn State University Natatorium.

Shackley, a Bedford Area High School senior headed to North Carolina State in the fall, is top-seeded in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke. She is the district record holder in both events with a time of 53.10 seconds in the butterfly and 50.83 in the backstroke.

Shackley is a six-time district champion, having won the backstroke three times, the butterfly the last two years and the 100 freestyle as a freshman. Shackley, the top-ranked girls high school swimmer in Pennsylvania, has qualified for four events at the U.S. Olympic Trials this June in Indianapolis.

Six events will be held Friday with five on Saturday.

The only other top seed from the region is Central Cambria sophomore Ethan Haycisak in the Class 2A 500-yard freestyle. He is also seeded second in the 200 individual medley.

Also in 2A boys, Cambria Heights' Rocco Dzurko is seeded second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 IM, and Tyrone's Spencer Dunklebarger is third in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke.

The Tyrone boys also boast two No. 2 seeds in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

In 2A girls, Hollidaysburg's Kara Neeley is seeded third in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, and Central Cambria's Lindsey Hodge is second in the 100 free.

In Class 3A boys, Hollidaysburg's Kaden Henderson is second in the 50 free and third in the breaststroke, Andrew Shanafelt is second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free, and Maxwell Baronner is third in the 50 free and 100 free.

Altoona's Trevor Wilson nailed down a second seed in the 200 IM, and he's third in the 100 backstroke.

In Class 3A girls, Altoona's 200 medley relay is seeded second.

Winners of each event automatically qualify for the state meet at Bucknell University in Lewisburg with 3A being held March 13-14 and 2A on March 15-16. Non-winning swimmers could also qualify for states based on times against other districts' qualifying meets.
