MORRISDALE -- Six wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area, including Altoona's returning champions Braiden Weaver (114) and Luke Sipes (152), advanced to today's Ultimate Warrior semifinals at West Branch High School.
In addition to Weaver and Sipes, three Tyrone wrestlers won their quarterfinals bouts on Friday in returning tournament runner-up Braden Ewing (285), Kyle Scott (172) and Andrew Weaver (189). Hollidaysburg's Mitchell Baronner (172) also advanced.
The 44-team tournament resumes at 9 a.m. today with the fourth round of consolations. The championship semifinals and consolation quarterfinals will follow at 11 a.m. A consolation semifinal round is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
The third, fifth and seventh-place bouts are set for 3 p.m. The championship finals are set for 5:15 p.m.
The second-seeded Sipes bulldozed his way through three bouts, recording falls in 16 seconds and 17 seconds before rolling to a 15-0 technical fall in 3:07. The 17-second pin of Philipsburg-Osceola's Haydn Kephart was Sipes' 100th career win.
Sipes, seeded behind Southern Columbia's Mason Barvitskie, will face old foe Parker Kearns of Mifflin County in the semifinals. Sipes pinned Kearns in overtime in the finals last season.
The top-seeded Weaver recorded first-period pins in all three of his bouts. Weaver will face Hickory's fourth-seeded Elijah Scriven in the semifinals.
Ewing is seeded second behind Port Allegany's Carson Neely, who beat the Golden Eagle in overtime, 3-1, in last year's finals. Ewing, who went 2-0, will face DuBois' third-seeded Zach Gallagher in the semifinals.
The second-seeded Scott didn't give up a point in his three bouts, including a 1-0 win over Altoona's Tykear Davis. Scott, seeded behind Mifflin County's Avery Aurand, will face Central Mountain's third-seeded Jacob Weaver.
On the other side of the bracket, Baronner went 3-0 with a pin and two decisions, including a 5-2 win over Central Clarion's fourth-seeded Mason Gourley. Baronner will face Mifflin County's top-seeded Avery Aurand in the semifinals.
The fifth-seeded Andrew Weaver went 4-0 with two pins, a technical fall and a 6-1 decision over Central Mountain's fourth-seeded Bryce Brungard. He'll face Bentworth's top-seeded Vatali Daniels in the semifinals.
Reynolds leads the team race by seven points over Mifflin County, 113-106, with Central Mountain a close third at 105. Altoona (57.5), Tyrone (52.5) and Hollidaysburg (51) are 14 through 16th.
Duo seek titles
BEDFORD -- Penn Cambria's Trent Hoover and Huntingdon/Williamsburg's Andrew McMonagle are looking to add another Thomas Automotive Tournament title to their respective wrestling resumes.
Hoover, who is vying for his third Thomas title, and McMonagle, aiming for his second, cruised to today's semifinals at 152 and 189, respectively, at Bedford High School. They're being joined by Northern Bedford's Wyatt Clouse at 121.
The tournament resumes at 9 a.m. today. The third, fifth and seventh-place finals are set for 3 p.m., and the finals are at 4:30 p.m.
Hoover, seeded second behind Clearfield's Brady Collins, went 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall. Hoover will face Line Mountain's Dalton Schadel in the semifinals.
The top-seeded McMonagle bulldozed his way to the semifinals with two first-period pins and a 16-0 technical fall in 3:46. McMonagle will face Frazier's Jackson Angelo in the semifinals. Angelo pinned Northern Bedford's Eion Snider in the quarterfinals in 3:36.
The fourth-seeded Clouse went 3-0 with a pin, major decision and a 3-2 win over Somerset's Sammy Sheeler in the quarterfinals. Clouse will face Northern Garrett's top-seeded Nate Wilhelm in the semifinals.
Chestnut Ridge leads the team race by 3.5 points over Huntingdon, 123-119.5.
3 Vikes advance
GROVE CITY -- Three Glendale wrestlers advanced to today's quarterfinals of the Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City.
Glendale's Dominic Kaufman (114), George Campbell (172) and Daniel Williams (285) all advanced to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals and consolations are set for 8:30 a.m. The semifinals will follow at about noon, and the consolations will follow. The championship finals are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Kaufman, a freshman, had two pins to reach the quarters, where he'll face Cranberry's top-seeded Dalton Wenner.
Campbell rolled into the quarters with a pin and a technical fall. Campbell will face Trinity's Bodie Morgan in the quarters.
The top-seeded Williams recorded two pins to advance to the quarters, where he'll face Hampton's Nate Glock.
Penns Valley leads in the team standings by 1 point over General McLane, 109-108. Glendale is in 12th with 66 points.
