CC teams knock off Heights

LORETTO -- Central Cambria defeated Cambria Heights in high school swimming action on Monday night at Saint Francis University.

Ethan Haycisak won the 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle to help the Central Cambria boys prevail, 102-53. Caleb Pisczek won the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle for the Highlanders.

The Central Cambria girls won, 97-71, with Lindsey Hodge winning the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Heights' Loren Stipanovich won the 100 free and 100 backstroke.

Altoona gymnasts victorious

DuBOIS -- Claire Piper's all-around score of 35.9 led all gymnasts and helped Altoona defeat DuBois, 140.325-121.625, in high school gymnastics.

Piper won the bars and floor for the Lady Lions. Emma Bettwy won the beam, and DuBois' Lauren Stroka won the vault.

ROCKWOOD -- Trent Nesbella scored 262 points to help Portage defeat Rockwood, 1,261-858, and record its first victory of the season in high school rifle competition.

Jonah Irvin scored 258 points, and Aaron Gabel added 253 points for the Mustangs.

EBENSBURG -- Bishop Carroll edged Forest Hills, 1,270-1,253, in high school rifle action behind a score of 261 by Dave Weinzierl.

Seth Cunningham contributed 255 points, and Lauren Behe scored 253 (a personal best). Avery Smiach led the Rangers with 258 points.

Heritage all-conference

ARMAGH -- The Heritage Conference released its 2023 falls sports all-conference teams on Monday, and several Cambria Heights and Portage athletes were recognized.

In football, Cambria Heights' Marshall Eckenrode, Trey Trybus, Tristan Weakland and Jaxxon Kline were honored, along with Portage's Issac Willinsky and Bode Layo.

Heights soccer players chosen were Cameron Abrams and Reese Garrison for the boys and Maria Wendekier and Morgan Ross for the girls.

In volleyball, Portage's selection was Brooke Bednarski, and Heights' was Mackenzie Mulraney.

Cambria Heights' Daniel Hock and Portage's Logan Gentile and Gabe Corte were boys cross country picks, while Heights' Savannah Hoover and Portage's Alex Chobany and Lily Haney were girls picks.

Portage's Jonah Irvin and Heights' Ian Nagel made the golf list.

Marching band selections included Portage's Daniel Behe and Isaac Geer, along with Cambria Heights' Olivia Farabaugh and Mitchell Elias.
