Heights tops rival Red Devils

4 min read

PATTON -- Brooklyn Galinis netted three goals in the opening 16 minutes of the game, with her second goal coming off a corner kick by Morgan Ross, and Cambria Heights topped Central Cambria, 4-2, in the District 6 Class 2A girls soccer quarterfinals on Wednesday.

"We knew how important this game was, and we wanted to have a strong start," Galinis said. "We could really feel it coming into today. We were connecting on our passes, and everyone was communicating well. We got off to a really good start."

Hannah Hite also scored for the Highlanders, who will play Philipsburg-Osceola or Bedford in the semifinals on Monday. Keeper Maria Wendekier made 11 saves.

"So starting the game often gives you insight on how the game's going to go -- you either start on point or you better adjust to get on point, especially at playoffs," Heights coach Nikki Spanik said. "It was good to see us have the majority of possession in the first 10 minutes with an early goal. That kind of paved the way for how it was going to go."

Ava Barra and Delia Blanco Jimenez scored for Central Cambria, which finished the season 8-10.

"We dug ourselves a hole through the first 15 minutes, but the girls kept battling," Red Devils coach Devin Shaner said. "We talked at halftime about coming out and scoring that first goal, which we did. That really gave us a chance.

"Cambria Heights is a good team, and they put one in on us that made it just a little too far to reach. These girls battled, and I'm really proud of their effort."

Lions fall in semis

Cole Johnson notched a hat trick for the Eagles, while Alex Smith and Tanner Wassilchalk added one apiece.

The Lions ended the season with a 5-14-0 mark. Somerset, now 13-4-2, will play Bedford for the championship on Tuesday at Windber.

"I thought our guys play hard. Even though we were down, we kept trying to work the ball," Chestnut Ridge assistant coach Greg Gibbner said. "I thought we gave them (Somerset) a good test. Overall, I'm proud of our boys' efforts. We just couldn't quite get the offensive push we needed to overcome the deficit."
