STATE COLLEGE -- Central's Griffin Snowberger, who just missed a medal by tying for 11th at the PIAA Class 2A boys golf championships last year, shot a 5-over par 77 on Monday at the Penn State White Course and is tied for 30th after the first round.
Snowberger also shot a 77 in the first round last year before rebounding with a second-day score of 75.
The Scarlet Dragon senior made a double bogey on the second hole, made bogey on three holes, including the par-5 18th and made par on the other 14 holes.
Nick Werner of Wyoming Seminary shot a 4-under par 68 and has a two-stroke lead in 2A.
West Shamokin's Alex Talmadge, who won the District 6 title, is tied for seventh at 1-over par 73 with nine other golfers, meaning Snowberger is currently four strokes back of a medal but with a lot of golfers also still in the hunt.
Northern Cambria's Brady Houser is tied with Snowberger, and Tyrone's R.J. Royer and Bedford's Josh Topper both shot a 6-over par 78 and are tied for 36th. Snowberger's teammate, Nick Baum, shot an 80 and is tied for 50th in the 72-player field.
Hollidaysburg freshman Crosby Denis is tied for 21st in the PIAA Class 3A girls field playing at the Penn State Blue Course after shooting an 82. As she did at the start of the District 6 championship, Denis got off to a slow start before finishing strong to keep herself in the hunt for a medal.
Plymouth Whitemarsh's Rhianna Gooneratne shot a 5-under par 67 to lead the 3A girls field.
Hickory's Sasha Petrochko leads the PIAA Class 2A girls championship after shooting an even par 72. District 6 champion Maddie Koshko of Saint Joseph's carded a 74 and is tied for fourth.
State College's Max Wager, the District 6 champion, is tied for third in the PIAA Class 3A boys championship after shooting a 4-under par 68. He's two strokes behind co-leaders Aidan Farkas of Saint Joseph's Prep and Wes Lorish of Plum, who both shot 66.
Hollidaysburg's Isaac Miller is 71st after shooting an 89.
The second and final round will begin this morning, and the top 10 players in each classification will medal.
