Central's Berkhimer wins 1A race again

REEDSVILLE -- Different year, same results for two Mirror coverage teams and one individual on Saturday at the District 6 cross country championships at the Indian Valley Elementary Center.
For the Central Cambria boys and girls teams, it was even more hardware as they both maintained their stranglehold on the rest of the field with the boys taking the 1A crown and the girls winning at 2A.
"It means a lot," Central Cambria coach Randy Wilson said. "I think some people think in terms of how many or whatever. But it's always about this year. I couldn't tell you how many we've won because it's always about this year."
Adding a little icing on to the victories for Wilson was that it was his birthday Saturday.
"I'm really glad (that we could get him a win)," Central Cambria's Keira Link said. "I know he definitely is happy."
Meanwhile, Central's Lanee Berkhimer has staked her dominance over the rest of the 1A as the sophomore captured her second straight individual championship.
"She came into the season absolutely ready for district competition right out of the gate," Central coach Lacey Ceschini said. "She and her father (Matt) work really hard. They have an exercise routine that's beyond anything I could ever prescribe for her. So, she comes in prepared, and maintains herself and her dedication to the sport throughout the entire season. She doesn't let off the gas for a second."
According to PA Milesplit, all three were favored to win their titles and all three lived up to the prediction.
The PIAA state championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Hershey's Parkview Country Club course.
The CC boys led the Class 1A field with 32 points, which was well ahead of Penns Valley's total of 76. Both CC and PV as teams will represent District 6 at Hershey.
Portage finished sixth with 187, Bishop Carroll was 10th with 273, Cambria Heights was 12th with 280 and Bellwood-Antis was 15th with 319.
The Red Devils captured their 10th straight crown -- eight in 2A and two straight at 1A.
Central Cambria earned its victory as the first five finished in the top 14 with junior Dom Kuntz's second place leading the way in 17:12.20.
"The boys raced really well," Wilson said. "Dom had a real big race getting second and they battled the whole way. In that race we had our top five in the top 14. … Pack running has been our strength all year."
Senior Evan George was fourth in 17:19.10, sophomore Ethan Haycisak was eighth in 17:30.10 with freshman Derek McConnell (18:03.50) and junior Jake Wilson (18:06.90) taking 13th and 14th.
Placing outside of the Red Devil top five that count for team points but are still moving on to the state meet were: junior Henry Bradley (52nd) and freshman Will Yokitis (66th).
Huntingdon senior Tyler Rader blew away the field from the start by finishing in 16:00.40 to claim his second straight district crown.
Kuntz was in fifth at the two-mile mark behind Forest Hills sophomore Tyler Caron, George and United's Colton Henning but made his push from there to cross the line over four seconds ahead of Caron who finished in 17:16.50.
"The goal was just to come here, run my own race and do the best I could do," Kuntz said. "I would have liked to get under that 17-minutes flat barrier. Here earlier in the season at Big Valley I ran 17:01, but at districts, I was more focused on place over time here -- just getting the team score as low as we could."
Portage sophomore Logan Gentile was the only other Mirror coverage area participant as he finished 15th in 18:09.90.
"I've run since seventh grade, and it's been a pain and a lot of work that I've put in for it," Gentile said. "But I'm happy to make it to states. … I was hurting today. The weather was nice though -- the cloud coverage was great."
The next 10 finishers outside of the members of the advancing teams were: Rader, Caron, Forest Hills' Josh Morrison (fifth), Henning (sixth), St. Joseph's Colin Simander (ninth), Huntingdon's Brady Honn (10th), Southern Huntingdon's Izaac Erwin (11th), Bald Eagle Area's Colton Wagner (12th), Gentile and Westmont Hilltop's Hunter Smith (16th).
Other area school's highest finishers were: Bishop Carroll freshman Brody Pablic (41st in 19:13.10), Cambria Height senior Daniel Hock (58th in 19:51.30), Williamsburg senior Jeremiah Ross (69th in 20:15.00), Bellwood-Antis senior Corry Shanafelt (71st in 20:16.80) and Juniata Valley sophomore Caden Walters (82nd in 20:43.90).
The Central Cambria girls bested the 2A field with 21 points to the 58 from runner-up Bellefonte while third-place Forest Hills was well off the pace with 108.
Penn Cambria was the only other Mirror area team that finished as it was sixth with 141,
The Lady Red Devils' title was the sixth straight and 18th in the last 19 years.
All five of the CC runners needed to count for team points finished in the top seven with all seven runners placing in the top 11.
Junior Keira Link's second-place ending led the way, while junior twins Abigail and Alaina Sheehan were third and fourth respectively in 20:01.60 and 20:34.50.
"What a great effort by Keira to go after the girl (Juniata's Sylvia Brubaker)," Wilson said. "It was awesome. It was just a great day (for our team)."
Meanwhile, sophomore Alaina Long took fifth in 20:41.40 and junior Morgan Brandis was seventh in 21:11.20.
Though their places weren't counted in the team results, CC senior Aubrey Ruddek (10th in 21:45.30) and freshman Kylee Krumenacker (11th in 21:47.80) proved they are more than capable of being in that top five on any given day.
Link and Juniata's Sylvia Brubaker were less than three seconds apart as the two came over the final hill in a battle to the finish.
Unfortunately, for Link, the freshman was able to pull ahead in the final seconds of the home stretch to claim the individual crown with a finish of 19:33.50 to Link's ending of 19:36.30.
"Everyone's cheering at the end was like kind of scary," Link said with a laugh. "So, I just started running and everyone was screaming at me to go faster. So, just started running as fast as I could, then she (Brubaker) went ahead and I was happy for her. … I'm grateful to have my team cheering me on."
The top five finishers other than the Lady Red Devils advanced to states as Brubaker, Forest Hills' Samantha Papcunik (sixth in 21:01.20), as well as the Bellefonte trio of Emma Raish (eighth in 21:20.70), Natalie Jolley (ninth in 21:33.90) and Emma Landis (12th in 22:01.00).
Other area school's highest finishers were: Tyrone freshman Sophia Witkamp (19th in 23:39.10) and Penn Cambria senior Leah Shoemaker (23rd in 23:58.00),
Berkhimer finished the course in 19:45.60 ahead of Richland freshman Natalia Mavridis by 16 seconds.
"It went pretty good. It wasn't as fast I had hoped," Berkhimer said. "But I'll still take the win. … I was trying not to worry about the time but I was trying to get in 18's."
The two competed against each other in the stacked Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference, and Berkhimer came out in front this time as she had in the previous meetings.
Mavridis's strategy appeared to be come out of the start faster than Berkhimer as the Ram took the early lead.
The disciplined Berkhimer kept her pace and waited for Mavridis to tire out which came before the mile mark.
Berkhimer maintained her second place spot until around 200 yards away from the 1-mile mark of the race when her calculated pace allowed her to go right by the tiring Mavridis.
"I think the girl from Richland (Mavridis) has a lot of heart, and really just pours on the gas and does everything she can," Ceschini said. "Lanee is just very able to keep a steady pace and she's aware that she can carry that pace throughout the whole thing. She runs a real strict kind-of a race."
From that point on, Berkhimer kept Mavridis at bay as the sophomore steadily increased her lead as she easily crossed the finish line ahead of the pack to earn her another trip to Hershey where she finished 10th a year ago.
"I kind of had a feel for how far ahead I was (the rest of the way)," Berkhimer said. … "I have to run my race and not get caught up in the start, but also not get boxed in."
Though catching Berkhimer was never a realistic goal once she fell into second, Mavridis then had to hold off Bishop Carroll freshman Ava Pablic which she was able to do by 10 seconds.
"I was definitely a little nervous at first. But as soon as you start running you just kind of let free and just keep going," Pablic said. "I tried to pace myself off of Natalia because her and I are the same type of runners. So, I just tried to go off of her because that's what I did for the LHAC (race)."
Pablic finished third in 20:11.90, while Portage senior Alex Chobany placed eighth (21:05.90) and Cambria Heights junior Savannah Hoover was ninth (21:19.90) to qualify for Hershey as individuals from the coverage area.
"It feels really good. It's nice to be able to do it (qualify for states) again," Chobany said. "I have an amazing team that supports me, so it's nice to have them behind me."
"So, knowing this course, it really helped me because I was able to know what parts I needed to slow down or speed up at," Hoover said. "The hills — I knew at the ending that I needed to sprint up that hill because the ending was close by."
Marion Center and United both claimed 91 points in the race for the team title. However, the Lady Stingers won the trophy based on a critera which took until the sixth place finisher from their team. Both teams advance to the state meet as the top two are pushed through.
St. Joseph's Academy wasn't too far off in third with 98 points.
Other schools from the coverage area that qualified in the team points were: Bishop Carroll in fifth with 150, Bellwood-Antis in sixth with 181, Portage in seventh with 200, Cambria Heights in ninth with 214 and Juniata Valley in 11th with 296.
In addition to Berkhimer, Pablic, Chobany and Hoover, the other top 10 individuals to advance were: Mavridis, West Shamokin's Jasmine Lucullo (fifth in 20:36.80), Richland's Grace Jakubowski (seventh in 21:00.51), the Penns Valley duo of Lillyanna Smith (10th in 21:22.30) and Ayva Fetterolf (11th in 21:29.50) as well as St. Joseph's Evelyn Reynolds (12th in 21:35.80.
Other top finishers from the coverage area in girls 1A were: Juniata Valley senior Madison Sneath (20th in 22:12.50), Bellwood freshman Julie Kraft (30th in 23:11.00) and Williamsburg sophomore Macy Norris (75th in 25:35.60).
Class 2A boys
Central sophomore Braden Allison bested his 11th place finish from a year ago by placing eighth this year to be the only athlete from the Mirror coverage area to qualify in 2A boys.
Allison, who was the fourth of five individual qualifiers, finished the race in 17:37.90.
The Scarlet Dragon had an up-and-down year throughout the first few weeks of the season, but showed his state qualifying-potential over the last couple of weeks.
"There has been some hard times, and those have helped me get to where I am now," Allison said. "Having the struggles of not finishing where I want to and not getting that time. But that really pushed me, and I got what I wanted and now I'm going to Hershey."
Juniata junior Wyatt Stroup took home the individual crown by holding off teammate Joseph Bomberger at the end with a finish of 16:14.40 to Bomberger's 16:16.40.
The Eagles claimed the overall team title as well as they had five place in the top 10 to account for 22 points.
Bellefonte, which will send Alexander Crist (third in 16:27.00), Kaiden Williams (sixth in 17:33.80), Alex Mansfield (seventh in 17:34.00) and Caleb Vinnedge (ninth in 17:56.20) to the state meet as inviduals, was second in the team race with 36, while Philipsburg-Osceola was third with 108.
Central came in fourth (120), Tyrone was fifth (125) and Penn Cambria was sixth (128).
The highest Mirror area individuals from each school were: Tyrone senior Ethan McCloskey (15th in 18:55.90) and Penn Cambria sophomore Ryan Giraud (20th in 20:06.10).
Class 3A girls
Hollidaysburg freshman Addison Smith and Altoona freshman Ashlyn Noce had over a three seconds between the two of them as Smith took third place with a time of 19:30.20, while Noce was fourth in 19:33.80.
The duo are the only two from the Mirror coverage area to advance to the state meet as individuals.
"I'm really excited because I know I've worked really hard for it," Smith said. "… I knew that if I ran what I know I can run, that I had a good chance of it (making it to states). The first mile, I was right around where I needed to be but there was still alot of people there. As the race went on, I pulled ahead and I was really happy."
Chloe Poindexter of State College had no problems winning the individual crown as the senior finished in 18:44.60 which was ahead of the pace of teammate Devon Jackson's time of 19:23.00.
State also took home the team title as they finished with 30 points — ahead of the Lady Lions with 69 and third place Lady Tigers which had 86.
The other individuals joining Smith and Noce are: Williamsport's Isabelle Sanders (fifth in 19:37.70), Central Mountain's Grace Keohane (sixth in 20:14.90) and Williamsport's Madeline Sanders (eighth in 20:18.10.
Class 3A boys
The Mirror coverage area had no team or individuals advance to Hershey from the 3A boys race.
Altoona sophomore Dean Sunderland was the highest area finisher by placing 15th in 17:27.40, while Hollidaysburg junior Sebastian Diaz was the Tigers' top placer with an 18th finish in 17:47.30.
State College ran away with the team crown as the Little Lions claimed the top five spots to finish with 15 points.
Altoona was second with 92 while Hollidaysburg was fourth with 109.
