STATE COLLEGE -- Central senior Griffin Snowberger shot a 1-under par 71 to win the Happy Valley Invitational Class 2A boys individual championship Thursday afternoon at the Penn State White Course.
Snowberger won a card-off against West Shamokin's Alex Talmadge, who also shot a 71.
"Winning the first event at the Invitational gives me a lot of confidence in my own and our team's ability to have a successful season this year," Snowberger said. "It felt good to get off on the right foot and have some momentum going into the regular season."
Snowberger's teammate, Nick Baum, tied for fourth by shooting a 73 and helped the Scarlet Dragons finish as the runner-up team at 21-over par, just behind champion Saint Joseph's at 18-over par.
Zach Oakes carded a 78 and finished tied for 18th for Central.
Tyrone's R.J. Royer tied with Baum for fourth place by also shooting a 73 as Tyrone finished 14th.
Central Cambria had a strong fourth-place finish as a team at 30-over par. Austin Semelsberger tied for 10th with a 76, Karter Cuppett was tied for 14th with a 77 and Jack Muldoon was tied for 20th with a 79.
Brandon Rabish led the 15th-place Penn Cambria boys with an 85 and tied for 38th.
In Class 3A, Altoona finished tied for ninth out of 22 teams at 35-over par. Krieghoff Cumming tied for 16th with a 3-over par 75. Landon Baker and Wyatt Young each shot an 80 and tied for 32nd, and Will Sankey's 88 tied him for 65th.
Shaler's Jacob Crissman won the 3A individual title with a 6-under par 66. State College's Max Wager was fifth with a 2-under par 70.
Peters Township won the 3A girls team title at 23-over par, and North Pocono's Gwen Powell won the individual title at 1-under par. The Altoona girls, led by Clarissa Long's 119, finished 11th.
In 2A, Hickory won the team championship at 18-over par, and Mercyhurst Prep's Katie Caryl won the individual title with a 5-under par 67. Saint Joseph's Maddie Koshko, the defending District 6 champion, finished third at 3-under par with a 69. She was playing with the Wolves boys team, which helped them edge Central for the team title.
Central Cambria's Jemma Sikora led all local girls 2A golfers by shooting a 104 and tying for 34th.
Tigers win BG Invite
Hollidaysburg won the Bishop Guilfoyle Invitational team championship at Park Hills Golf Course in both the boys and girls fields.
The Golden Tigers were led by Isaac Miller's 77, Mason Goodman's 79 and Keagan Hockey's 80 in shooting a 324, nine strokes better in the stroke-play competition than Bishop Guilfoyle, which was led by Nick Helsley's 76 and Brody Partner-Gore's 78.
Northern Cambria's Brady Houser was the boys indvidual medalist with a 73 to help the Colts finish fourth.
The Lady Tigers, made up of the team of Alexis Peacock, Laila Panaro, Lucy Carles and Crosby Denis, playing in a scramble format, shot 65 to defeat runner-up River Valley by a comfortable margin of 14 strokes.
