The undefeated and top-seeded Central Cambria girls softball team will be tested in its first playoff game when the Lady Devils host the longtime kingpin of District 6, Philipsburg-Osceola, in the Class 3A quarterfinals on Monday.
Central, which earned the third seed in that classification, will host Richland the same afternoon, and seventh-seeded Penn Cambria will play at Juniata at 3:30 p.m.
All three local teams will be hoping to make it to the finals at Saint Francis University on June 1.
In Class 5A, the championship game is already set.
Hollidaysburg will take on top-seeded Central Mountain at 2:30 p.m. at SFU on Wednesday, May 24. The winner of that game will play the District 8-District 9 winner in a subregional.
Only one team from the Mirror's coverage area made the playoff field in Class 2A, and fifth-seeded Cambria Heights will be on the road against fellow Heritage Conference team Marion Center on Monday. The winner will likely play top-seeded Bald Eagle Area.
In Class 1A, Claysburg-Kimmel is the No. 3 seed and hosts Bishop McCort in the quarterfinals while second-seeded Glendale waits for the winner of the Juniata Valley-Williamsburg first-round game on Monday. If C-K and Glendale both win, they would play each other in the semifinals in an attempt to secure a spot in the championship game on May 31.
Baseball
Hollidaysburg will play Central Mountain for the District 6 Class 5A championship at Bald Eagle Area on Monday at 4 p.m., and Altoona will be hoping to earn a shot at the Class 6A title in its semifinal game against Mifflin County on Thursday at home.
If the Mountain Lions win, they would play top-seeded State College at Mount Aloysius on Wednesday, May 24 at 4 p.m. State College has already beaten Altoona twice this season.
In Class 3A, the winners of the last two PIAA championships, Central and Tyrone, both play Friday.
The fifth-seeded Golden Eagles will travel to Westmont Hilltop, and second-seeded Central will host Penn Cambria in the quarterfinals. Those teams will be trying to get to Sargent's Stadium at the Point on May 29 for the 4 p.m. District 6 championship game.
In Class 1A, Claysburg-Kimmel will travel to eighth-seeded Bishop Carroll, and Juniata Valley will head to seventh-seeded Moshannon Valley for first round games on Thursday. The winner of the JV-MV game will play second-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic at Vets Field on Monday.
Fourth-seeded Portage will host Bishop McCort in a quarterfinal game Monday while Williamsburg, the sixth seed, will travel to Blacklick Valley in a Monday quarterfinal at 1 p.m.
