Hollidaysburg crowned four individual champions at Friday's Altoona Mountain Lion Track & Field Classic, but the performances of Aubree Waksmonski and Emily Clapper are tied together, despite only one of the two bringing home gold on any given night.
It was Waksmonski who won the Class 3A 400-meter dash at Mansion Park Friday, but Clapper wasn't far behind, placing third.
"We push each other so much at practice," Waksmonski said. "We're always right beside each other trying to beat each other."
Waksmonski's time of 59.68 was a personal best, and it's a number Clapper is targeting.
"I kind of had a rough spot (in the middle of the season), but now I'm back where I want to be," Clapper said. "I want to try and get down to one minute."
Clapper beat Waksmonski for the title at the Altoona Igloo a month ago.
"I think it makes us a lot better," Clapper said. "We're teammates, but we still compete against each other at the same time. It pushes us."
Waksmonski credited workouts with her coach and training to her improved times and said she'll be trying to win districts. But if Clapper wins? Well, she would settle for another PR.
"When you're off the track, you are best friends," Clapper said. "We're on the (1600-meter relay) team. We travel everywhere together, and we're really good friends. The competition doesn't really affect us at all."
In addition to Waksmonski, Lily Jodon won the high jump by clearing 5 feet for the Hollidaysburg girls. Nathan Grabill won the same event for the Golden Tigers, clearing 6 feet. His teammate, Caden DeLattre, also won an individual championship in the triple jump with a distance of 44 feet, 10 inches.
Altoona placed third in both the boys and girls competition. State College won the boys title, 131.5-108, over South Western, and Lewisburg beat State College, 99-92.5, with the Lady Lions just a point behind the runner-up spot.
Hailey Kravetz, who set the school record in the 300-meter hurdles this season, won that event for Altoona, and freshman Kihlee Noel captured the discus title with a throw of 110 feet, 8 inches.
"I thought our team had a good performance," Altoona coach Paula Foreman said. "We had a lot of PRs. (Noel) got the win, and that was a PR. We expect her to continue to improve throughout the season."
On the boys side, Nathan Lutz continued his impressive year with a win in the pole vault, clearing 15 feet for Altoona.
"I'm using bigger poles to try and get to bigger heights," Lutz said. "It's stiffer. The flex numbers will give you more shoot off the top to convert bigger heights. Sixteen is the number I want, so I'm going to go get it."
Lutz was coming off a third-place finish at the Penn Relays where he was the top finisher among competitors from Pennsylvania.
"That was everything I wanted and everything I have worked for," Lutz said. "It was basically for that. Coming off that, I'm going to keep trying to break records and jump high."
Lutz nearly cleared 15 feet, 7.5 inches, in fact he actually did, only to see the bar fall after he was already on his way down to the mat.
"Those are frustrating, but I'll come back and get it another day," Lutz said. "I'll keep working. It just adds fuel to the fire."
Indiana's Abby Huey won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes to capture the Coach Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer Award for the girls competition, and South Western's Bernard Bell won the boys award after winning both hurdles and the long jump.
Kravetz and Lutz were the Altoona winners of the Gutzwiller Awards for Outstanding Performers from Blair County, and Sedona Clapper and Grabill took home the honors for Hollidaysburg.
More than 90 teams, between Class 2A and 3A boys and girls, competed in the meet, which started at 12:30 p.m. and wrapped up after 10 p.m.
"It's a lot of work, and a lot of preparation," Foreman said. "Every one of the coaches involved in the meet do so much. Steve Rhodes does a lot of the administrative work behind the scenes. Tom Musselman, Mike Adams, so many people do so much. It's a lot of work and everyone does a great job."
