Smith key to Hollidaysburg’s win

PHILIPSBURG -- Hollidaysburg's Matt Smith went 2-for-3, scored three times, drove in three runs, doubled and hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning to help Hollidaysburg beat Philipsburg-Osceola, 5-4, and remain unbeaten in a high school baseball game Thursday.

Smith started the game and struck out five before Landon Perry picked up the win in relief striking out four as the Golden Tigers improved to 4-0.

Pirates top Ferndale

JOHNSTOWN -- Colton Verbonitz and Coltyn Wagner each doubled, and Wagner, Preston Long and winning pitcher Logan Brantner drove in runs as Williamsburg topped Ferndale, 3-0.

In other Williamsburg baseball news, athletic director Jeff Detwiler informed the Mirror that the Blue Pirates inadvertently used an ineligible pitcher during Tuesday's win over West Branch. Due to this, Williamsburg has forfeited the contest resulting in a win for West Branch.

Micah Lapila collected three hits and three RBIs, including a solo home run to lead Cumberland Valley to a 7-3 win over Altoona at Juniata.

Ryan Rubin added two hits and an RBI while winning pitcher Aidan Barrow-Somers pitched six innings and struck out nine.
