DeLattre, Lutz each turn in historic performances

Hollidaysburg junior Caden DeLattre had what seemed to be the appropriate response to competing in a track meet called the Igloo before his brother Cole urged him to make a wardrobe change Saturday morning.
"I got up and started putting on layers and layers of clothes," Caden DeLattre said. "My brother came over and asked what I was doing. He told me it was supposed to be 65 and sunny, and I was like, 'are you kidding me?'"
If there would have been an actual igloo at Saturday's 46th annual Altoona Igloo Invitational, it would have melted and what remained would have been blown away by strong winds later in the afternoon at Mansion Park.
For the first four hours of the meet, the weather was among the best it has ever been for the event, but at 2:38 p.m. the meet was suspended for 15 minutes due to high winds and dark skies. As athletes and fans searched for shelter, the meet was canceled at 2:47 and everyone was asked to evacuate the stadium with some events left unfinished and not started.
Caden DeLattre managed to make his change of outfit worth it, though.
After placing sixth in the 100-meter dash, a new event for him this year, he nearly fouled out of the long jump before qualifying for the finals on his last attempt. Once there, he broke the Hollidaysburg school record in the event, twice. His winning leap ended up at 22 feet, 5 inches.
"I ran three 100-meter dashes, and I think it threw me off a little bit. I was a little tired," DeLattre said. "I think it will honestly help me eventually, because it will get me more warmed up and more ready for my jumps."
DeLattre said he already has his eyes on reaching 23 feet this season.
More history was made in an event often canceled by wind, the pole vault.
Altoona's Nathan Lutz won the vault by clearing 15 feet, 2.5 inches which set a junior-class record at the school.
"I did not let the wind bother me and fought through adversity," Lutz said. "I kept a smile on my face. It's just determination. I have a drive inside of me, and I'm never satisfied with what I did last week. I just want to come and get a new PR and have fun every time I come out."
Lutz nearly cleared a vault of more than 16 feet, which would have set a new overall school record, on his final attempt, but the bar just shook loose at the last moment.
"I'll be so determined to get to another level," Lutz said. "I'll be practicing every day, hitting the weight room, working on the track. I want to keep pushing through and get to 16-1."
Bellwood-Antis senior Lydia Worthing won the girls pole vault by clearing 10 feet after playing in the Altoona Mirror Classic high school basketball all-star game the night before.
Lutz was joined on top of the podium by teammates Hailey Kravetz (300-meter hurdles), Reese Wilber (1,600-meter run) and Triumph Kilmartin (high jump).
"It was good, but I went tactically," said Wilber, who finished in 5:21.72. "I definitely think I could have ran faster, but I wanted to win."
The Buffalo commit said the weather change led to a different approach.
"It's rough, because you have different warm-ups based on the temperatures," Wilber said. "But I do think my team and I handled it well. I really want to make states in either the two-mile or the mile. I just want to end my high school career with a bang."
Kilmartin's high jump of 5-2 was enough to top former District 6 champion Lily Jodon of Hollidaysburg and Tyrone's Reagan Irons, who won a bronze at the PIAA meet in the event last season.
"I was so happy to even get 4-10, so the fact I was able to get 5-2 today, I was just so grateful," Kilmartin said. "I'm just hoping to improve as the season goes on and hopefully get to 5-4."
Kilmartin said the wind wasn't helpful, but the warm weather was.
"I was going against the wind, but thankfully it held off for the most part," Kilmartin said. "I was so happy when I saw it was going to be warm today and not freezing like last year."
Hollidaysburg's Emily Clapper also brought home a first-place finish by topping teammate Aubree Waksmonski in the 400-meter dash.
"It was a good race, and it's a really nice day out which helped," Clapper said. "Training in the cold makes it easier when it's hot out, because your muscles are more tense when it's cold. When it's hot, it's a breeze."
In an event that was not completed, Juniata Valley's Ellie Manyara broke her school record in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 11.5 inches.
Homer-Center's Justley Sharp broke the meet record in both the girls discus and shot put, and Riverview's Amberson Bauer, who also won the boys 800-meter run, set a new meet record in the 1,600-meter run that had stood since 2004.
