Lady Highlanders hold on to capture season opener

PATTON -- Cambria Heights jumped out to a 7-1 lead and held on for a 7-5 win over Conemaugh Valley in high school softball action on Monday.

The Lady Highlanders got two doubles and three RBIs from Lexi Griak to go with two hits each from Martina White, Rylee Bernecky and Macey Mezzelo.

Karin Adams and Sidney Nihart combined to get the win in the circle.

Conemaugh Valley fell to 0-2.

EBENSBURG -- Central Cambria belted out four home runs and pounded Homer-Center, 13-0, in five innings.

Kami Kamzik, Sophie Blasko, Keira Link and Kait Rozsi homered for the Lady Devils, and Liv Janosik and Jordan Krawcion each went 2-for-3 in a game they led, 7-0, after two innings.

Kamzik and Aubrey Ruddek combined on a one-hit shutout.

Portage romps

WINDBER -- Sydney Castel and Lyndsey Castel each drove in three runs, and Sydney Castel added three hits, as Portage downed Windber, 12-3, behind 17 hits.

Lily Koban added three hits and two RBIs for Portage, which scored seven runs in the fourth for a 9-0 lead. Teammates Lexi Slanoc added three hits and two RBIs.

Winning pitcher Paige Phillps struck out eight and walked two while scattering nine hits over seven innings.
