Altoona set to host Mid-Atlantic event

From Mirror reports

The Altoona entry in the Babe Ruth 13-15 Middle Atlantic Baseball Regional Tournament is hoping the saying “home sweet home” is proven accurate.

Altoona will be the host team for the tournament, which begins Wednesday. All games will be held at the Altoona Teener Baseball League’s Seitz Field.

“This is a huge opportunity,” Altoona manager Brian Bell said. “The kids are all excited.”

Altoona won the state championship in Williamsport recently, and a majority of the players were on last year’s 14U team that made it to the Middle Atlantic Regional championship game in Somers Point, N.J.

Team members are Paul Wedel, Gavin Bell, Dontae Emerick, E.J. Ulery, Connor Cobaugh, Justin Herman, Elijah Shade, Brayden Winters, Braxton Zitsch, Cayden Gibbons, Jay Albarano, Brady Steiner, Michael Cacciotti, Vincent Cacciotti and Will Sankey. Bell is assisted by Andrew Wedel, Chris Cacciotti and Tom Cobaugh.

“We’ve been here; we have experience,” Bell said. “We do have some high expectations — we ultimately would like to get to the championship game, and hopefully win it this year and become the first team from Altoona to advance to the Babe Ruth World Series (which will be held in Stafford, Va.).”

Altoona is in Pool A and will face South New Jersey runner-up Hopewell/Ewing in its first game at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Altoona will then play Maryland runner-up Frederick County at 8 p.m. Thursday and Williamsport’s West End, whom Altoona beat in the state final, at 8 p.m. Friday.

The semifinals are Saturday with the championship slated for 2 p.m. Sunday.
