Dragons facing early start, long trip

The Central baseball team will be getting up early for a long road trip on Thursday.

The District 6 champions will travel to Seneca Valley High School in Zelienople for a Class 3A quarterfinal game against District 10 champion Fairview, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.

The Scarlet Dragons are facing a trip of about 2 hours and 20 minutes while Fairview will be traveling about 1 hour and 20 minutes despite Central being considered the "home" team as the one on the top of the bracket.

District 10 runner-up Franklin will play District 9 champion Punxsutawney at 5 p.m. at Slippery Rock, and the winner of that game will play either Central or Fairview on Monday in the 3A semifinals.

Claysburg-Kimmel's softball team will stay in District 6 and take on District 4 champion South Williamsport at the Milesburg Little League Complex at 3 p.m. in a 2A quarterfinal game. If the Lady Bulldogs win, it could set up a District 6 championship game rematch against Southern Huntingdon, which is playing District 12 champion Conwell-Egan at Millersville University at 2 p.m.

Also in another 2A quarterfinal game on the other side of the bracket, District 5 champion Everett will play WPIAL third-place finisher Laurel at Norwin High School at 4.

In Class 1A softball, District 6 runner-up Glendale will play District 2 champion Old Forge at Williamsport's Elm Park at 4 p.m. in a quarterfinal contest.

Other games of local interest include a softball doubleheader at Saint Francis University on Thursday featuring a pair of District 6 champions.

Class 5A champion Central Mountain will take on Armstrong High School at 2 p.m., and Deer Lakes will play Class 3A champion Bald Eagle Area at 4:30 p.m.

In 2A baseball, District 5 champion Everett will play District 4 champion South Williamsport at Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill at 4:30 p.m. Also of note in that bracket, WPIAL runner-up Neshannock will play WPIAL third-place finisher Riverside at Seneca Valley High School in a game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. following the Central-Fairview game.

In 1A quarterfinal action, Bishop McCort will play District 11 champion Tri Valley at Mount Union at 4 p.m., and District 5 champion Southern Fulton will try and punch its ticket back to the PIAA semifinals against District 9 runner-up Clarion-Limestone at Homer City's 1st Commonwealth Field at 4:30 p.m.
