Numbers help B-A boys claim meet victory

LOYSBURG -- The Bellwood-Antis boys topped their closest competitor by 33 points in the Blue Devils' penultimate appearance Monday at Northern Bedford High School in the Inter-County Conference track and field championships before they move into the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference in 2023-2024.
"I thought our kids did really well," Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich said. "It was a hot meet today, which was a little bit different from the rest of the season. I think our depth played a big role in our victory today. We had three guys place (in the 110 hurdles) and two guys place in some other events, and that really helps. I'm really happy with our guys' improvement from the start of the year to the end of the year."
That depth doesn't just mean extra points by placing multiple times in several events, it means the Blue Devils push each other in workouts and practice.
Sean Mallon topped teammate Cooper Keen to win the 400-meter dash and immediately credited Keen with helping him get to where he is a week before the District 6 meet.
"It helps a lot," Mallon said. "We're competing with each other all the time. It really pushes us to meet our limits. It's really great to see both Cooper and I's hard work pay off and it's just at the right time with districts coming up."
Hunter Shawley, who won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles for Bellwood-Antis, had two teammates place in the top six behind him in the 110-meter hurdles.
"Today has been really good," Shawley said. "The weather has been really nice, and I have been running really good races. I'm at the point I was at during states last year, I just have to get there. I have met my times I had at states and passed that. I'm ahead of the game. I just have to keep up with my form."
Shawley was also part of the winning 400-meter relay team from Bellwood-Antis, and Dylan Andrews dominated the pole vault event to bring home another title.
Though the Blue Devils won the team title, they did not win any of the top performance awards. Those went to Northern Bedford's Mason Detterline (jumper), Mount Union's Alex Kyle (thrower) and Tussey Mountain's Collin Gillis (runner). Kyle won the shot put and discus, and Gillis won both sprints.
Detterline won the high jump with a performance of 6 feet, 3 inches and the long jump before finishing second in the triple jump.
"Feels good to be named the outstanding jumper," Detterline said. "I worked really hard for it, so it's nice to get the recognition."
The Northern Bedford senior has his eyes on making some school history now that the weather is finally improving.
"I (had a personal best) in the high jump," Detterline said. "I had a good day there. My long and triple were OK. I had an OK day. They weren't my best jumps but also weren't my worst. It's been a mixed season because of bad weather. I haven't gotten to where I wanted to be quite yet, but we still have districts and hopefully states to get some of the records I'd like to get."
On the girls side, Lydia Worthing's dominant performance in the pole vault was the highlight of Bellwood's day. Worthing cleared 10 feet, 3 inches.
"I'm really happy, because last year I got second here," Worthing said. "I was stuck on 9-6 forever, so getting two personal bests this year feels really good. Sometimes I just feel good, and today was one of those days."
Worthing has been improving with each meet this season after getting a late start in track due to being part of the Lady Blue Devils' basketball squad that made the PIAA semifinals.
"It was tough missing the first two weeks of conditioning," Worthing said. "It was a little weird jumping into things, and I had a little bit of a rough start to the year. I think it impacted me a little bit, but it wasn't too bad.
"The ultimate goal, eventually, is to get the school record. I'm still a bit away from that, it's 11-6, but that's my ultimate goal. I hope to eventually get there."
Bellwood-Antis also got a first-place finish from Sophia Nelson in the 100-meter hurdles and from its 3,200-meter relay team. Northern Bedford's Lizzie Long won the discus.
Everett's Ashley Yocum won the meet's outstanding jumper award, West
Branch's Marley Croyle won the top thrower, and Juniata Valley's Morgan Hess won the award for top runner.
Hess' performance, along with wins in both sprints by Addalyn Brower, helped Juniata Valley win the girls team title, 136-90, over Bellwood-Antis.
"It's really exciting, because we really have come a long way," Hess said. "The distance crew has come a long way, and we have worked so hard. We meet up all winter and practice all year round. To see us grow into what we are now is really exciting, and it's exciting for me to win the top ICC runner award again this year, but I give all the glory to God for giving me the health and strength to be able to do what I'm doing."
