College signing

2 min read

Name: Sophia Nelson

High school: Bellwood-Antis (played scholastically for Tyrone co-op)

Hometown: Bellwood

Sport: Soccer

Position: Midfield

College choice: Penn State Altoona

Other colleges considered: Penn State (University Park)

Why I picked Penn State Altoona: "Both of my parents went to Penn State, and I grew up going to soccer games in University Park every fall. Though I was accepted to the main campus, I decided to transfer after visiting the Altoona branch and their soccer program. Penn State Altoona has a great kinesiology program, and it's very close to my home. I am looking forward to getting all the benefits of a big school education but with a small school experience."

Greatest high school achievement: "I've had incredible experiences in high school, but a few that stand out would be being in the honors program throughout high school, scoring game-winning goals in soccer and winning the state championship my freshman year."

Travel coach Daryl Sarver's quote: "Sophia has always been a highly coachable player who has remained focused on understanding the game and improving her game. She is a smart player who analyzes the field around her creating opportunities for herself and teammates to score."

How I got my start playing soccer: "Soccer has always been such a big part of my life. I started playing at 4 years old in AYSO before graduating to club soccer at age 8. My dad has been my coach since the very beginning, and it's always been something that we do together. He has put so much time and effort into my game, and I'll always be grateful to him.''

Favorite college growing up: Penn State

Other interests: Track and field

What getting to play in college means to me: "Having the opportunity to play in college means a great deal because I grew up going to Penn State women's soccer games. Soccer is a part of who I am, and I look forward to continuing to improve my game, grow as a player and, best of all, be a part of a team."

Probable college major: Kinesiology

Parents: Steve and Tera Nelson
