Altoona Area High School senior Jake Adams overcame a lot to have the chance to compete again in track and field for the Mountain Lions this season.
Last year, he saw his junior spring season end abruptly after suffering a hamstring tear. He also ended up not competing for the football team this past fall after suffering a second hamstring tear in the summer.
"I worked so hard to get to this point," he said. "It's a big accomplishment for me."
During the 45th annual Altoona Igloo Invitational at Mansion Park on Saturday, he topped the long jump record for the meet with a mark of 23 feet 8.5 inches. That topped a mark that stood since 1992.
Even more staggering, he just missed the school record set by Altoona legend Brady Gehret.
"I didn't know if I was ever going to come back full strength," Adams said. "It's just a big relief to be back."
No team results were kept in the meet, but several area athletes, besides Adams, stood out.
Altoona senior Ethan Stroup might have enjoyed the biggest meet of any. He dominated the boys' throws, winning the shot put and discus while also placing second in the javelin.
Other Altoona boys winners were Ty Friedenberger in the 100-meter dash and the team's 3200-meter relay.
On the girls' side, Altoona sophomore Hailey Kravetz won the 100 hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles. The Altoona girls also won two relays -- the 400 and 1600.
Tyrone's Reagan Irons had a strong day for the Lady Eagles as she edged out Natalie Lippincott from Bedford in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 0 inches.
"I didn't have my steps right, so I went off a teammate's, but I ended up fixing it," Irons said of her adjustments. "I moved up, and it felt normal."
Irons finished third in the triple jump at 34-1.5 inches and eighth in the long jump at 16-.5 inches.
Altoona Lady Lion Brooke Long has high goals for her final high school season. She enters 2022 as the defending PIAA Class 3A girls long jump state champion.
She took fifth place in the event on Saturday with a mark of 16 feet 10.5 inches.
"I definitely think it's harder," Long said of her challenge to repeat as champion. "A lot of girls have worked really hard. I definitely have competition. I'm nervous, but excited at the same time."
Long is also hoping to add the 100 dash to her medal collection. She recorded a 12.59 in the event for a second-place finish.
Other notables
n State College's Shannon Mullin knocked down two jump records. She topped the girls long jump record with a mark of 18-11.5 and the triple jump at 38-0.5. The long jump standard was set by Rachel Gehret in 2006 and later tied by Penn Cambria's Lyric Janosik in 2019 at 18-9.5 inches. Gehret is the former holder of the triple jump record going back to 2006 at 37-10.5 inches.
n Trent Dinant of State College just missed out on the 1600-meter run record with a time of 4:25.2, which is 2 seconds shy of the mark set in 2004.
