LOYSBURG -- Friday night marked the first time since 2019 that the Northern Bedford Track & Field Invitational was able to be held.
The warmer temperatures played a big factor as six boys and three girls meet records were broken.
"We didn't have it last year because of the weather and the year before because of COVID," Northern Bedford's Mason Detterline said. "So, it's nice to finally get back to a big track meet like this."
The event consisted of 22 schools with four -- Central, Northern Bedford, Penn Cambria and Portage -- being from the Mirror's coverage area.
Penn Cambria played a part in two of records being broken as sophomore Carter McDermott set a new mark in the long jump with a mark of 22-0™. The previous mark was held by Bedford's Derrick Harris in 2005 with 21-6§.
In addition to breaking the meet record, McDermott also set a new school as he beat the previous mark of 21-8.
McDermott also ran the first leg of the Panthers' record-setting 4×400 meter relay team as he combined with Josh Stolarski, Brandt Patterson and Cole Ebehart to account for a time of 3:29.68.
The previous meet high was Bedford's 2010 squad which finished with a time of 3:31.44.
"This team is fairly new to this race. It was only me on the team last year," McDermott said. "We got three new guys that have never done it before. So, it's definitely nice to put us three scrawny kid together and dominate this race."
Stolarski, also a sophomore, captured the 400 dash with a time of 52.09 -- besting Ashton Sober of Northern Garrett who ended at 52.51.
McDermott and Northern Bedford's Mason Detterline had never competed against each other until the Shippensburg Invitational a few weeks ago, and they got their second crack at it Friday night.
Detterline got the better of McDermott in the triple jump with a mark of 43-2¢, while McDermott was listed at 42-11.
However, it took Detterline's last jump attempt to overtake McDermott who was sitting in the top spot until then.
"If I didn't jump my last jump, I wouldn't have won the triple jump," Detterline said. "So, I had to push myself like, 'Ok, you've got to beat this kid. You've got to run as hard as you can, and you've got to make sure your phases are right so you can just squeak out a win'."
En route to winning the long jump, McDermott turned the tables and bested Detterline's mark of 19-9.
"It's nice to have some competition to drive you to do better," McDermott said. "I think the reason for me breaking the record was him (Detterline) beating me in the triple. I was like, 'Man, this kid beat me, now I want to beat him'."
Detterline would claim a second title with a two-inch win over Windber's Keith Charney in the high jump with a mark of 5-11.
In the boys team standings, it was basically a five team battle between Richland, Windber, Penn Cambria, Bedford and Chestnut Ridge for much of the day.
Windber was able to pull away in the final few events to claim the team title with 84 points followed by Richland (78), Penn Cambria (76), Bedford (61), Chestnut Ridge (55) and Northern Bedford (40) to round out the top six.
Central finished in the 10th spot out of 15 boys teams with 20 team points, while Portage was 13th with 12.
On the girls side, Portage's Cami Burkett claimed a title in the 200 dash as she avenged a loss to Bedford's Grace Sarver by winning with a time of 26.77 -- just .04 ticks ahead.
"I'm a lot stronger in the 200," Burkett said." I was pretty confident after the 100 because I was proud of myself because I was closer than I thought I would be."
Sarver defeated Burkett in the 100 dash early in the meet with a time difference of 12.70 to 12.96.
"I've never raced against her (Sarver) before but I know of someone who has, and she's always talked really good about her," Burkett said. "So, I knew she would be really good."
The time was a new meet record for Sarver as she bested the old time of 12.84 established by Chestnut Ridge's Samantha Valiton in 2008.
Northern Bedford's Lizzie Long was the only other area athlete to claim first place as she took home the top spot in the discus with a throw of 99-0.
Long's throw was better than Hancock's Joslyn Foltz, who threw it 97-07.
In the girls team race, it was Bedford and Forest Hills that grabbed control early and ran away from the pack to make it a two-team race.
In the end, the Lady Bisons bested the Lady Rangers with a score of 101-94§.
Portage was sixth with 33 points, Central was seventh with 26, Penn Cambria tied Hancock for eighth with 23 and Northern Bedford finished in ninth with 19.
On the boys side, the other records that were broken were two by Conemaugh Township sophomore Ethan Black who owned the 100 and 200 dashes.
Black bested former Johnstown speedster and NFL player LaRod Stephens-Howling's mark in the 100 by finishing in 10.07 with the previous mark being 11.04 in 2005.
In the 200 dash, Black's time of 21.83 bested the previous mark of 22.59 held by Ean Mann of Hancock.
Richland's Logan Gossard established a new mark in the pole vault with a throw of 13.06 -- beating the old mark of 13-03 set by T.J. Young of Chestnut Ridge in 2010.
Detterline, Bollman and Black were the only double winners from the meet on the boys side.
On the girls side, Belle Bosch of Chestnut Ridge shattered the old meet mark in the javelin as the junior came up with a throw of 145-03, which beat the old mark set by Bishop Carroll's Britt Krug in 2015 by 15-feet.
Autumn Bedford's Becker claimed the third new mark on the girls side as she ran a time of 47.08, which bested the old mark of 47.76 set by Jordan McIntosh of Forest Hills back in 2016.
The girls had two double winners as Delaney Dumm of Forest Hills captured the 1600 and 3200 runs, while WIndber's Riley Brubaker took home first in the long and triple jumps.
