PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins, with the playoffs just around the corner, could head into the postseason with Casey DeSmith as their No. 1 goalie because of an injury to starter Tristan Jarry.
All the Penguins are saying at this point is that Jarry suffered a lower body injury and will be out on a week-to-week basis, meaning DeSmith will start Thursday at home against the Boston Bruins.
Pittsburgh has five games remaining, with the final regular season game slated for April 30 against Carolina at PPG Paints Arena. The playoffs start shortly after that, and no team wants to lose its top goalie, let alone a team with title aspirations despite a recent swoon.
Pittsburgh is in third place in the Metropolitan Division at 43-23-11, seventh overall in the conference. The Pens are tied with Boston for seventh. Both teams have 97 points.
Jarry played in last week's win over the Islanders but did not make the trip to Boston in this past weekend's 2-1 loss at Boston, which DeSmith started. At some point during the New York game, Jarry was injured.
DeSmith, 30, gave up two goals in the first 2:01 of the first period in the Boston loss but was in shutdown mode after that for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, the Pens scored just one goal in that final 57:59 of the game.
DeSmith is 40-27-11 in 91 career NHL games. He signed with the Penguins 2017. DeSmith's backup for the time being is Louis Domingue, originally drafted in the fifth round by the Phoenix Coyotes back in 2010. He started one game this year for Pittsburgh and won it, giving up just one goal. For his career, he is 59-59-10 with a goals against average of 3.04.
The four goalies down on the farm on Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's roster are Joel Blomqvist, Filip Lindberg, Alex D'Orio and Tommy Napier.
