The Altoona Mirror sports department was recognized by the Associated Press Sports Editors for a 20th consecutive year.
APSE judged the Mirror sports section to be among the top 10 in the country in the Division C classification (circulation 15,000-35,000).
In addition, freelance photographer Chuck Meyers was honored in the action sports photo category of Division C for the second straight year.
There were 45 newspapers entered in Division C and more than 150 newspapers in the overall competition.
The contest includes daily and weekend section competition along with individual writing, photo, display and website categories.
The Mirror sports department consists of Buck Frank (sports editor), Michael Boytim and Scott Franco along with part-timers John Hartsock and Nate Ritchey.
"APSE recognition in any year is gratifying, but to be honored 20 straight years is a tribute to the standard the Mirror has set in our sports coverage," Mirror Managing Editor Neil Rudel said. "In addition to our regular staffers, we also appreciate our many contributors who have helped make our sports section what it is. Most of all, we thank our readers for their positive feedback and continued support."
