Altoona's Luke Sipes went 5-1 and finished second at 152 pounds in the NHSCA freshmen national tournament on Sunday in Virginia Beach.
Sipes, who placed fifth in the PIAA Class 3A Championships last weekend, was seeded second in Virginia Beach.
Sipes lost, 11-3, to Georgia's top-seeded Dominic Bambinelli in the finals. For Bambinelli, who scored 99 points in the tournament, it was the least amount of points he scored in his six bouts.
Bambinelli charged out to a 9-1 lead after two periods with two takedowns and five nearfall points. He added a takedown in the third, while Sipes had two escapes.
Sipes breezed to the semifinals with a 15-4 major decision, 7-1 decision, 6-0 decision and a 7-0 decision. In the semifinals, he took down Nebraska's third-seeded Cade Ziola eight seconds into overtime to win, 4-2. Ziola went on to place third.
Sipes, who was 36-3 during the high school season, was one of 24 from Pennsylvania who placed in the top eight.
Fouse wins state title
Northern Bedford freshman Jordyn Fouse captured a state title at 130 pounds at the MyHouse Girls State Wrestling Championships on March 13 at Central Dauphin High School.
Fouse went 4-0 in the tournament with two pins, a 13-2 major decision in the semifinals and a 9-0 major decision over Kayla Husti-Luca in the finals.
Fouse, who was 14-14 at the high school level this season, won titles at the Keystone State Championships and Tulsa Girls Nationals last year.
Northern Bedford's Raegan Snider finished sixth at 136.
Chestnut Ridge's Patron Plummer won a state title at 148, recording a pin of North Allegheny's Leyna Rumpler in 1:53 in the finals. Moshannon Valley's Autumn Shoff was fourth at 100 pounds.
