Six wrestlers from the Mirror coverage advanced to the semifinals of the Southwest Regional Class 2A Tournament on Friday at Peters Township High School's AHN Arena in McMurray.
They did in dominating fashion, combining for seven pins, a major decision and four decisions in the first round and quarterfinals.
Tyrone's Korry Walls (106) and Ashton Sipes (132), Glendale's Zeke Dubler (160) and Suds Dubler (172), Penn Cambria's Trent Hoover (126) and Central Cambria's Ethan Kubat (189) all advanced to the semifinals and automatically qualified for next week's PIAA Championships.
The top six at every weight class qualify for the state tournament in Hershey. By reaching the semifinals, the area wrestlers can do no worse than sixth.
Wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with the first round of consolations. Another consolation round will follow before the 12:30 p.m. semifinals. The championship finals, third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place bouts are set for 5:15.
Walls pinned his way to the semifinals, decking Derry's Dylan Klim in 1:10 and North Star's Colton Frazier in 2:21. Sipes opened with a 5-1 win over Freedom's Tanner Millward, and followed with an 11-2 major decision over Mt. Pleasant's Greg Shaulis.
Walls will face Burgettstown's top-seeded Parker Sentipal in the semifinals. Sipes has a semifinal matchup against second-seeded Joey Sentipal.
Hoover followed a 51-second pin of Freedom's Gavyn McCray with a 3-1 win over Quaker Valley's Brandon Krul. Hoover scored a takedown with 57 seconds left in a 1-1 bout. He'll face Chestnut Ridge's Kobi Burkett in the semifinals. Burkett won by injury default in the semis.
Zeke Dubler recorded pins in both of his bouts, decking Chartiers-Houston's Jesse Orbin in 1:15 and Beth-Center's Trevor Pettit in 2:45. Dubler faces Derry's Christian Hirak in the semifinals.
Suds Dubler waited a little longer to get his pins, putting away Southmoreland's Bryson Robinson in 5:40 and Quaker Valley's Mason Diemert in 5:00. He'll face Marion Center's Gavin Stewart in the semis.
Kubat earned a 6-0 win over Beth-Center's Alston Csutoros and an 8-3 decision over Central Valley's Brennan Morgan. Kubat faces off next in the semis against Quaker Valley's top-seeded Patrick Cutchember.
There are 18 other area wrestlers who will try to navigate their way through the consolations.
Bellwood-Antis' Xander Shank (152), Braden Ewing (285), Central Cambria's Karter Quick (285) are in the second round of consolations after quarterfinal losses.
Tyrone's Logan Rumberger (113), Lukas Walk (138), Reese Wood (145) and Andrew Weaver (160) are in the first round of consolations.
Penn Cambria's Nathan Little (152), Austin McCloskey (160) and Austin Wagner (189) are in the first round, as are Northern Bedford's Eion Snider (160), Aaron Bowers (172) and Derek Beach (285),
Glendale's George Campbell (132) and Britton Spangle (215) are in the first consolation rounds, Bellwood-Antis' Ethan Norris (215) and Aaron Laird (285) and Central's Jaxon Matthews (132) are also in the first round.
Chestnut Ridge has eight in the semifinals and leads the team standings by 43.5 points, 111.5-68, over Burgettstown. Bald Eagle Area (49.5) and Forest Hills (49) are third, and fourth, respectively.
