Tyrone plans wrestling reunion
Bob Bubb and Pete Dutrow served as Tyrone Area High School’s head wrestling coaches during separate tenures from 1959 through 1979, and both men believed that it was important for the wrestlers, coaches, cheerleaders, managers, fans and their associated family members and friends from that era to periodically renew their acquaintances with one another as time has passed.
Dutrow and Bubb were the driving forces for two previous reunions for the 1959-1979 Tyrone wrestling contingent in 2012 and 2015, and the third and final one will be held this August.
Known as “The Last Weigh-In,” this year’s event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 7 and Sunday, Aug. 8.
“This is the third one that we’ve had, and this will be the last one,” said Dutrow, 79, who served as the head coach of the Tyrone wrestling program for 13 seasons, from 1966 through 1979, after putting in two years as an assistant coach under Bubb during the 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons, before Bubb left Tyrone to become the longtime head coach at Clarion State University.
“When I was helping Bob with summer wrestling camps at Clarion after he had left Tyrone, we talked for years about getting the people back together who had wrestled for us,” added Dutrow, who also served as Tyrone’s athletic director for 13 years. “We had our first one in 2012 and our second one in 2015. The first two were nice, and I am sure that this year’s event will also be a good time.”
The centerpieces of the event will be a Saturday evening social featuring finger foods and a cash bar at The Bull Pen Restaurant in Tyrone, beginning at 6:15 p.m., as well as a Sunday morning brunch at the Tyrone Elks Club that begins at 10:30 a.m.
A golf outing — for which tee times and reservations have already been booked — will be held at the Sinking Valley Country Club on Saturday at 1 p.m., and on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., former Tyrone wrestler Bill Elder — a 1962 Tyrone grad — and his wife, Cara, will be doing an entertaining skit at the Wesley Methodist Church depicting George and Martha Washington.
There will be a $15 registration fee for all invitees from the Bubb-Dutrow coaching eras. The invitees will include all wrestlers who have completed a season between 1959 and 1979 — whether or not they had ever wrestled a varsity match — as well as the various other individuals associated with the Tyrone wrestling program during those 20 years.
Area coaches from other schools, as well as PIAA officials who have worked the Tyrone matches, are also welcome.
For anybody bringing a guest to the Sunday brunch, there will be an additional charge of $10, bringing the total cost for the weekend for invitees and guests to just $25.
Registration deadline is Saturday, July 17, and the required registration forms can be obtained in print form by contacting Dutrow at email@example.com or by calling Dutrow at (814)-937-9838.
Reunion information can also be obtained by emailing davecaz@comcast, as well as by logging on to former Tyrone wrestler Tom Fink’s Facebook Page. Fink can be reached by phone at (602)-334-7628.
The registration fee also includes a Bubb/Dutrow Era T-shirt for all invitees. Invitees should report their T-shirt sizes prior to the event.
“This is a real neat thing,” Fink, a 1973 Tyrone graduate and three-year varsity wrestler, said of the reunion. “There are a lot of people who have put a lot of work into this, especially Pete Dutrow. I just hope that we get a lot of guys showing up.”
Dutrow said that the 2012 event drew about 200 people and the 2015 event drew about 125.
“After the 2015 event, Bob (Bubb) wanted to have one more,” Dutrow said. “And we’re advertising this final one as the Last Weigh-In.
“We’re setting it up so that most of the event will allow the people to socialize with one another. I think that it’s going to be very nice.”
