Golf fans were treated to an impressive performance at last week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
At just 22 years old, American Nelly Korda showed the poise of a veteran while posting a four-day total of 19-under par, edging out tour veteran Lizette Salas by three shots.
The victory was a popular one for golf fans in this country as Korda's win moved her to the top of world golf rankings. She is the first American to reach number one since Stacy Lewis in 2014.
Korda comes from a family of highly-accomplished athletes. Her sister Jessica is a fellow member of the LPGA, while brother Sebastian is a professional tennis player.
Korda's win last week also marks the first time that both father and daughter have won major championships. While Nelly captured last week's Women's PGA Championship, her father Petr, a tennis pro, won the 1998 Australia Open.
PA Amateur Qualifier
Scotch Valley Country Club recently hosted a qualifying event for this year's Pennsylvania Amateur Championship.
A total of 32 golfers from across the state participated in the tournament and when the competition ended, Scotch Valley's Anthony DeGol was one of four golfers to earn a qualifying spot.
DeGol's score of 72 placed him in a tie for second place behind Ryan Ferry's medalist score of 71. His reward is a spot in this year's State Amateur tournament scheduled for historic Merion Country Club in Philadelphia, July 26-28.
DeGol came close to winning this prestigious event in 2010 when he posted scores of 69-73-72 to finish in third place.
Mount Union ALCC
The father/son duo of Luke and Lantz Thompson captured last weekend's best-ball event in Mount Union.
The Huntingdon duo finished with scores of 66 and 63 to win the 48th edition of this popular Mount Union event. There are no local best-ball tournaments over this holiday weekend, but play will resume at Sinking Valley for the club's 54-hole stroke-play invitational, July 9-11.
WPGA Senior Event
Sinking Valley's Greg Ferguson put up a fine showing in Wednesday's WPGA Senior Series event at Latrobe Country Club.
Ferguson finished with a 2-over par score of 74 to finish in second place, just one shot behind winner Sean Knapp, the nationally-ranked senior amateur from Pittsburgh.
