Event shortened; teams tie for first

TYRONE -- Weather has not been friendly to the Sinking Valley Country Club lately after storms this past week knocked down trees and created additional debris this past week at the course.

Sunday afternoon, the final round of its Two-Man Best Ball Tournament was ultimately shortened by the inclement weather that rolled through our area as Artie Fink Jr. and Anthony DeGol tied with Mike Macionsky and Christopher Perry for the top spot in this year's event. The final round was cut short around 7 p.m.

"It was crazy," Fink said of what he saw ahead of the storm cleanup last week. "Wednesday night's weather -- basically it looked like a tornado had come through there. It couldn't have happened at a worse time for those guys.

"(Club pro Troy Monahan) and Chris Poorman, the greenskeeper, did an amazing job. I didn't think there was much of a chance of playing golf on Friday. I figured it was going to be a two-round tournament."

Both teams shot scores of 164 after being tied on Friday, and each side won a round against the other by a difference of one stroke.

"Friday was kind of tough," Fink said. "It was pretty windy. It's weird to say when you win a tournament, but I don't think Anthony and I played our best golf this weekend. Anthony and I were so frustrated we couldn't get anything going."

That was before they made six birdies and an eagle putt Saturday morning to put them on track.

Fink said he appreciates the efforts of those involved in making the event happen even though the weather was difficult.

"All the volunteers and the members down there, they all did an unbelievable job," he said. "I'm guessing there's a lot of places they wouldn't have been able to play Friday (without their help)."

Winners of the additional flights were Andrew Smith and Derek McAlkich (177 in the second), Henry Marche and Matt Himes (185 in the third), John and Jake Taylor (211 in the fourth), R.J. Barnard and Brett Weibley along with Randy Jarratt and Dave States (220 in the fifth), Jim Estep and Daryl Yoder (228 in the sixth) and Tom Kyle and Derek Winterburn (232 in the seventh)
