Tigers’ Barton defeated by impressive freshman
Remember the name David Lindsay.
He could become one of the all-time greats in area tennis circles.
Just a freshman, Lindsay won Central Mountain High School’s first District 6 singles boys championship Wednesday by beating Hollidaysburg sophomore Nathan Barton, 6-0, 6-0 at Mansion Park.
“He’ll play at a high level Division I in college,” Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said after watching Lindsay dispatch Barton in less than an hour.
“You can tell he puts in a lot of time and it pays off,” Denis noted. “He’s DI caliber now. He’s another level.”
Denis said Barton is the best player in this area and he was no match for Lindsay.
Lindsay has lost only one game all season. That’s one game. Not one set. He hasn’t lost a set all year.
The only game Lindsay dropped was during an early-season match against Barton and Hollidaysburg at the Summit Tennis and Athletic Club.
“He’s like 168-1,” Central Mountain coach Pete Wert said when asked Lindsay’s record. “He’s the whole package.”
Wert said Lindsay is ranked in the USTA and has plenty of support from his family.
“I don’t have to coach much,” Wert said with a smile. “He works hard, trains hard and works on his agility to put pressure on the other players.
“He’s a year-rounder,” Wert said. “Oh, and he has a sister in 6th grade who is quite a player.”
Despite losing, Barton put up a good effort.
“I thought I had a game in the second (set), but it wasn’t to be,” Barton said. “I wish him the best.”
Lindsay, a 6-footer, plays only one sport — tennis.
“I’m a one-sport guy,” he said quietly. “I wanted to win the school’s first district (boys) championship. I’d say my serve and forehand are my strong points.”
Class AAA actually was a combination District 6 and 4 tournament because players from Williamsport and Shikellamy were entered.
The Class AA tourney was won by Richland’s Vignesh Elangovan, who defeated Juniata’s Max Lauver, 6-2, 6-0.
Altoona athletic director Phil Riccio and AAHS tennis assistant coach Mark Sapita were tourney co-chairmen.
The District 6 doubles tourney will be played next week at Mansion Park. The state tournament is May 28-29 at Hershey.
