A taste of wrestling coming to Tyrone

Top-notch wrestling competition featuring some of the best scholastic talent that the state of Pennsylvania has to offer will be on tap this Saturday night at the Tyrone Armory/Tyrone Community Center.
An 18-match dual-meet card will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday that will be comprised of 15 high school boys matches, two high school girls matches, a junior high boys match, and a featured bout between two former PIAA high school standouts who went on to become collegiate NCAA All-Americans.
The event will be closed to the public because of COVID-19 concerns, but the matches will be streamed live on the Rokfin platform.
There will be 15 folkstyle matches and three freestyle matches contested, with the featured senior-level match pitting former Brookville High School state champion and Clarion University standout Brock Zacherl against former Boiling Springs High School and Lock Haven University standout Kyle Shoop following a freestyle format.
After winning a PIAA state championship for Brookville in 2014, Zacherl went on to become a four-time NCAA tournament qualifier at Clarion.Shoop was a three-time PIAA medalist in high school and a four-time NCAA qualifier who placed seventh in his weight class at the 2019 NCAA tournament.
Of the 15 high school boys dual meets, four will involve wrestlers from District 6. The District 6 competitors will include: Central Mountain’s Dalton Perry, who will take on Greater Latrobe’s Vincent Killeary at 113 pounds; Mason Gibson of Forest Hills, who will battle Gary Steen of Reynolds at 120; Erik Gibson of Forest Hills, who will oppose Burrell’s A.J. Corrado at 160, and Mifflin County’s Trey Kibe, who will oppose Waynesburg Central’s Luca Augustine at 170.
Another wrestler on the high school boys card with ties to District 6 will be Seneca Valley senior Dylan Chappell, who will oppose South Park senior Joey Fischer at 129 pounds. Chappell, who will wrestle collegiately at Bucknell, is related to the late former National Basketball Association and Portage Area High School basketball standout Len Chappell.
In the junior high school boys matchup, Bo Bassett of Forest Hills gets Nathan Desmond of Bethlehem Catholic at 100 pounds.
