Ridge’s Knisely delivers

McMillen, Bollman, Cassidy, Moore win

INDIANA — Chestnut Ridge’s Duane Knisely knew going into the Southwest Regional Class 2A Tournament that his road to a title was going to be a hard one.

But the senior traveled the road to a gold medal.

Knisely got by Mount Union’s returning state runner-up Jake Ryan, 6-4, in the semifinals, and then he won his showdown against Glendale’s Cory Johnston in overtime, 3-1, to capture the 220-pound title on Saturday night at IUP’s Ed Frey Arena.

“After the semis, I knew it was as good weekend for me,” Knisely said. “I’ve been feeling good. It came together just right for me. I went out, gave it my all, and I knew if I did, I’d come out on top.

“I knew the big three of us were going to be the main studs here in the tournament. I didn’t take any of my other matches lightly, either, because in regionals, you never know what can happen. Everyone is good. I just made sure I brought it more and more as we went on.”

Knisely was one of five wrestlers from the Mirror coverage to capture titles.

Knisely’s teammate Calan Bollman earned the 106 title with a 6-4 win over Bald Eagle Area’s Coen Bainey.

Bedford’s Kaden Cassidy captured his third Southwest Regional title with a 6-0 win over St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Zack Witmer. It was his second with Bedford, with the other coming as a freshman at Bishop McCort.

Glendale’s returning state champ Brock McMillen captured his second regional title with a 3-1 overtime win over Burrell’s Ian Oswalt.

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Parker Moore, an unlikely pick to win a title at the beginning of the season, defeated Westmont Hilltop’s Tanner Dluhos, 7-1, to claim the 195-pound title.

Ridge’s Kai Burkett finished second at 113 for the second straight year, dropping a 1-0 decision to South Park’s Joey Fischer.

Huntingdon’s Roland Mills took second at 120, getting pinned by South Park’s Joey Fischer.

A combined 28 wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area qualified for the state tournament, which begins March 5 at Hershey’s Giant Center, including eight from Chestnut Ridge. The top six at every weight class advanced to states.

Ridge had five other state qualifiers in Nathan Holderbaum (third, 120), Ross Dull (third, 126), Kaleb Miller (sixth, 132), Luke Moore (sixth, 152) and Daniel Moore (sixth, 160). Gryphon Callihan (145) placed seventh but didn’t qualify.

The Lions earned their third regional title by 36 points, 141-105, over St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy. They also won in 2015 and 2018.

“It’s great,” Ridge coach Josh Deputy said. “I knew the boys would respond, and I’m super proud of them. It was a team effort. It was fun, lots of fun.”

Glendale had two other qualifiers in Zeke Dubler (fifth, 113) and Tristan Rutter (sixth, 145). The Vikings (88.5) finished fourth in the team standings.

Bellwood-Antis had two state qualifiers in Alex Taylor (fourth, 160) and Evan Pellegrine (fifth, 285). P-O had two other placers in Hunter Weitoish (third, 160) and Chase Chapman (sixth, 138).

Northern Bedford had two qualifiers in Colby Imler (fourth, 170) and Ian Sherlock (fifth, 138), as did Tussey Mountain in Hunter Horton (fifth, 126) and Matt Watkins (sixth, 285)

Tyrone’s Hunter Walk (third, 113), Bedford’s Ashton Dull (fourth, 195), Huntingdon’s Myles Baney (sixth, 182), Cambria Heights’ Ian Eckenrode (fifth, 182) and Central’s Jaxon Matthews (fifth, 106) will also be wrestling in Hershey.

Other seventh and eighth-placers were Glendale’s Suds Dubler (seventh, 126), Kyle Jasper (seventh, 285) and Seth Dudurich (eighth, 195), Bedford’s Mat Emerick (eighth, 120) and Camden Koontz (eighth, 126), Tyrone’s Alex Waver (eighth, 170) and Everett’s Logan Propst (seventh, 220).

Knisely and Johnston went through a scoreless first period before Knisely escaped in the second period. Johnston escaped in the third to tie the score and send the bout into overtime.

They looked like they were headed toward the tiebreakers, but Knisely hit a double-leg, moved up to a bearhug and took Johnston down with 2 seconds left in OT. The Ridge crowd celebrated the big win.

“I knew I had to get on a good one,” Knisely said. “I knew I had the stamina to make it happen, so I wasn’t worried about it. I saw an opportunity, took it and it felt great.”

“Duane wrestled a smart match,” Deputy said. “He let it all hang out, and I’m so happy for him.”

“The kid capitalized on a nice takedown in overtime,” Glendale coach Billy Dubler said. “All in all, Cory had a great tournament. Hopefully we’ll see him down the road deep in the medal rounds at states.”

Bollman, a freshman, didn’t seem to be nervous in his first regional final. He scored his first takedown of Bainey out of a flurry in the first period, but Bainey scored a reversal.

Bollman reversed with 51 seconds left in the second and took a 4-2 lead into the third. Bollman took Bainey down again at the edge of the mat in the third and rode tough until Bainey got a reversal with 2 seconds left.

“It felt pretty good,” Bollman said. “What felt the best about it was knowing that the hard work I put into the sport pays off.”

“He’s had a great year for a freshman,” Deputy said. “When he first came up, we had some things to take care of technique-wise, and he’s worked really hard to do that. You’re kind of seeing the fruits of that right now.”

Cassidy, who earned his 100thwin earlier in the tournament, scored two takedowns, received a stalling point and escaped to earn the decision.

“That’s probably the best I’ve felt all year in a tournament,” Cassidy said. “I feel like I’m peaking at the right time due to my coaches. It feels good have three (titles).

McMillen and Oswalt went into overtime tied 1-1. With time winding down, Oswalt initiated a move, but McMillen countered with a funk roll, got to his feet and took Oswalt down with 5 seconds left.

“My mentality is to score,” McMillen said. “I kept trying to score. I just got in the right position I felt comfortable in and I got a takedown.”

Moore, who was 9-16 as a sophomore last season, was losing, 1-0, to Dluhos in the third period when he received an interlocking point to tie the score. Dluhos, who has a wicked headlock, chose to release Moore.

The Mountie junior took advantage, taking him down and scoring three nearfall points. As time expired, the large P-O contingent roared its approval.

“It’s amazing,” Moore said. “I was excited just to make it here, and to win it is something else. Last week, I don’t think I wrestled to my potential, so I really focused on working on my feet this week at practice, and I think it paid off.”

It’s the second time Burkett has lost to Fischer by a point in the regional finals. Last year, Fischer won, 4-3. This time, Fischer escaped in the second and rode Burkett the entire third period.

“We’ll get back to it,” Deputy said. “He wasn’t at his best this weekend, but we’ll refocus and see what we can do.”
