Ridge takes bronze for third straight year

HERSHEY — After suffering a loss to Southern Columbia in the semifinals of the PIAA Dual Championships on Friday night, Chestnut Ridge didn’t show any signs of a letdown on Saturday.

The Lions, ranked fifth by PA Power Wrestling, dominated Burrell, 44-10, in the consolation semifinals and beat third-ranked Saucon Valley, 36-31, in the consolation finals at the Giant Center.

The score against Saucon Valley is deceiving because Ridge forfeited the final two bouts.

Ridge, which ended the regular season with an 18-2 record, finished in third place for the third straight year and placed in the top four for the fifth time since 2013.

“I thought we rebounded really well, and I knew we would,” Ridge coach Josh Deputy said. “The boys were pretty upset last night, but we just don’t have enough to compete with Southern Columbia.

“They woke up this morning, and they were in great spirits. Boy, they showed it. They saved our best for last, and that was awesome to see. I was super proud of them.”

Against Burrell, the Lions got pins from Kaleb Miller (132) and Gryphon Callihan (145). Miller’s pin was actually a defensive pin in 2:28 over Trent Valovchik. Burrell was deducted two team points due to unsportsmanlike conduct by its coaches, who objected to the pin.

The score after the team points were deducted was 32-minus 2. Ridge also had a 41-1 lead after 152. Burrell lost another team point at 160 pounds.

Calan Bollman (106) and Kai Burkett (113) won by major decision. Ridge even got a win from backup sophomore Jack Moyer, 5-1, over Dalton Corwin at 152.

Ridge got another fast start against Saucon Valley (20-4), rolling to a 27-3 lead after the first seven weights. Bollman (30-3) and Ross Dull (32-7) had pins at 106 and 126, respectively. Kai Burkett (31-4) won by forfeit at 113.

Decisions in that run came from Duane Knisely (33-3) at 285, Nathan Holderbaum (27-9) at 120 and Miller at 132. Knisely beat Nicholas Warnke, 4-0, and Holderbaum followed later with a 10-8 win over Travis Riefestahl. Miller edged Cael Markle, 5-2.

Callihan was in a 2-2 bout with Liam Scrivanich at 145 when the Lion senior turned his opponent and pinned him in 4:11. Luke Moore defeated Thomas Spirk, 10-4, at 160.

“It was great for Gryphon as a senior to seal the deal,” Deputy said. “He deserves it. He’s done a lot for our program, and he’s kind of been that solid cog in the middle for a lot of years.”

Many of the Saucon Valley wrestlers were very comfortable with upper body wrestling.

“They’re a super dangerous team,” Deputy said. “They’ll throw you from anywhere and everywhere, and when they do it, they do it with conviction. Luckily, we came out on the good end of many of those attempts, but there were some scary moments.”

Bollman, Burkett and Knisely went 5-0 over three days.

Reynolds won its fourth straight Class 2A title with a 34-27 win over Southern Columbia. Nazareth won the Class 3A title with a 38-21 win over Waynesburg.

The Lions will now prepare for Saturday’s District 5 Tournament.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” Deputy said. “We’re going to take a day or two to get healed up. I have a great coaching staff. We’ll divide and conquer and get them to refocus.”
