With the high school volleyball season just around the corner, the Class 1A field in District 6 looks to be the strongest when it comes to area teams showing up on the radar.

Northern Cambria, Bishop Guilfoyle and Bishop Carroll are all expected to be ranked in the top 10 when the preseason poll from the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association comes out. The Lady Marauders are the returning champions.

In the class 4A field, it seems to always come down to Altoona and State College with the Little Lady Lions as the returning champions.

In the class 3A field, Huntingdon should be solid while Hollidaysburg will be under the guidance of new coach Jamie McGreal. Somerset is the returning District 6 champion.

Just based on the club volleyball season, Bald Eagle Area is supposed to be the team to beat in the class 2A field. Penn Cambria is the defending district champion, and Central Cambria is now under new coach Jason Layman.

Here is a look at some of the teams in the Mirror's coverage area:

Altoona

Coach: Karan Price, 36th season

Career record: 442-210

League: Independent

Last year's record: 11-4

Returning starters: Seniors--Maddie Benton, Kaila Clawson, Mackenzie Kirwin. Junior--Bridgid Fox.

Other returnees: Seniors--Brittney Chestney, Kizzey Thompkins. Juniors--Emily Albright, Katie Cumming, Amber Woytowiez, Izzy Zavalanski. Sophomores--Hailey Alwine, Maggie Fox, Gianna Marcelli, Ireland McClelland, Alex Troutman.

Newcomers: Junior--Baylie Horton. Freshmen--Rylee Albright, Anna Batrus, Kassie Clawson, Andrea Kiser, Jaylyn Long, Julia Savino, Sarah Weathersbee, Lyzee Wilson.

Strengths: "We have a solid core of experienced athletic players returning. As always, we feel that our tough serving, as well as our passing and scrappy defense, are the cornerstones of our teams' strengths."

Concerns: "We have a very demanding schedule that will push us to become more consistent and disciplined with all the little details of the game. Even with our experience, we expect to have some young players in our lineup. They will need to grow quickly as they will be expected to contribute in our transition offense and blocking."

Overall outlook: "We are excited to get our season under way. Once again, our team has set very high goals. Provided we play more discplined volleyball, coupled with determined player-driven leadership, we feel confident that our team will not only be exciting to watch but a definite contender for the District 6 Class 4A title by the end of the season."

Assistant coaches: John Saboe, Chris Perino, Makenzie Wilt, Jenna Abram

Junior high coaches: Chris Perino, Makenzie Wilt, Jenna Abram, Dave Swartz

Other returnees: Seniors--Devan Miller, Cassidy Nouse, Teresa Custer, Larkyn Edwards, Heidi Rush, Joellica McKean, Reilly Tegler. Juniors--Daphne Stayer, Sharees Klavuhn, Clarece Smith, Kaitlin Brunelli, Emmely Patrasso

Strengths: "Communication, teamwork, unity and friendship."

Concerns: "Durability and focus."

Overall outlook: "We are very excited to see our ladies in action. We want them to maintain their focus and strength for every match and to succeed and learn from their failures."

BELLWOOD-ANTIS

Coach: Annette Wilkins, ninth season

Career record: 120-35

Strengths: "Our returning seniors are providing a very positive upbeat atmosphere for our underclassmen."

Concerns: "Besides our two returning seniors, our team is pretty young."

Overall outlook: "It will be interesting to see what such a young team can do. They are each bringing a lot of enthusiasm to the team."

Assistant coach: Heather Quick

Junior high coaches: Brandon Frazeur, Phoebe Potter

BISHOP CARROLL

Coach: Katie Wyland, first season

Last year's record: 16-10 overall; 10-6 LHAC

Conference: Laurel Highlands

Returning starters: Juniors--Anna Haigh, Kate Yahner, Liz Keim, Kayla Repko, Caroline Ratchford, Carly Clark. Sophomore--Mara Yahner

Other returnees: Senior--Caroline Semelsberger. Junior--Maddie Murphy. Sophomore--Sara Muriceak

Newcomers: Sophomores--Rachel Verchereau, Lauren Sichko, Jackie Dumm, Meagan Leahey, Mia Wyland. Freshmen--Ellie Long, Taylor Wahl, Maddie Smith

Strengths: "Most of my starters last year are returning, and the younger girls have stepped up to replace last year's seniors. They are hard-working girls who want to become the best they can be and will not stop until they are. Every girl on the team has a positive attitude and very respectful of each other."

Concerns: "During the season, when the team hits some bumps, that they will lose their confidence in themselves and not play like the team they know they are."

Overall outlook: "This should be a very good year. The girls have a great positive attitude and have been working very hard during the offseason. As long as they keep working hard and have the drive, they can be amongst the top of the (LHAC) and make a far run into districts and states."

Assistant coaches: None

BISHOP GUILFOYLE

Coach: Bob Kasun, 13th season

Career record: 172-91

Last year's record: 9-14

Conference: Laurel Highlands

Returning starters: Juniors--Gabby Krug, Pam Lund, Beth Yahner, Rachel Meintel

Other returnees: Seniors--Carly Ebersole. Juniors--Rachel Resick, Alicia Nicolini, Mickie Smith, Emily Brown, Mackenzie Delongis. Sophomores--Emily Kasun, Giana Georgiana, Alyssa Erndl, Lexi Kilmartin, Blaise Kilmartin

Newcomers: Senior--Tessa Crider. Junior--Kaylee Goodling. Sophomores--Emily Murgas, Amelia Morning, Ashlee Rumbaugh. Freshmen--Teresa Haigh, Maddie Smith, Jaedyn Montler.

Strengths: "We have great depth on this team. Our practices will be very competitive. This team has great chemistry and drive. Players understand their roles and perform them well.''

Concerns: "The Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference will be extremely competitive again. Five of the 12 LHAC teams advanced to the PIAA state playoffs last year. That tough schedule, plus a non-league match at Altoona and two very strong tournaments at State College and Northern Cambria, will mean we have to be on top of our game almost every night.''

Overall outlook: "I think Northern Cambria, Bishop Carroll and BG are three of the top teams in the state in Class 1A. We realize there is a target on our backs as defending District 6 champions, but this team is talented, has great depth, works really hard and plays well together so they have high expectations.''

Assistant coaches: Gary Evangelisto, Jess Welteroth, Rachel Potopa

CAMBRIA HEIGHTS

Newcomers: Sophomores--Brenna Packard, Abbie Eckenrode, Jade Thomas, Abby Becker, Emily Hayes, Abbey Kinney

Strengths: "We have a team of well-rounded offensive and defensive players."

Concerns: "The LHAC will be tough, so we just need to focus one game at a time."

Overall outlook: "Our Lady Highlanders are on a mission to have a winning record. We feel they have all the pieces to make it happen, and we as coaches are looking forward to cheering them on along the way this season."

Assistant coach: Stacie Packard

CENTRAL CAMBRIA

Coach: Jason Layman, first year

Career record: 0-0

Conference: Laurel Highlands

Last year's record: 9-11, 5-5 LHAC

Other returning letterwinners: Senior--Lexi Wirfel. Juniors--Leah Bracken, Sydney Shaffer. Sophomores--Liz Bopp, Cassidy Bezek, Emily Keiper

Newcomers: Junior--Alivia Lucas. Sophomores--Julia Mobley, Taylor Hritz, Kiersten Szpala, Serena Koss, Maggie Kudlawiec

Strengths: "Offensively, we are very strong and have four core hitters who can attack the ball from any position along the front line. Our height should be a major advantage over many teams in the league, making it difficult for our opponents to stop our offensive attack. Defensively, we are returning one of the top liberos in the league, who is like a Hoover vacuum in the back row, cleaning up anything she can get her hands on. Many of the girls also played club volleyball in the offseason for Ridgetop Storm, so they're used to a high level of competition and know how to win."

Concerns: "We need to work extremely hard on serving touch and effectively, using a jump float serve from various players. Also, our setter is very green to the varsity level, so we need to ensure our passes are spot-on for the setter to be able to run the quick offense."

Overall outlook: "My short-term goal as head coach is to win the Laurel Highlands and make a run at a district championship, and bring home the D6 trophy to Central Cambria. Long-term goal for the season is to make the state playoffs and make a nice run at the state level. The girls are determined and anxious for the season to begin and have worked hard all offseason. They continue to push themselves each day, which should play off come late October when we make a run at districts."

Assistant coaches: Kevin Ickes, Cassie Layman

Other returnees: Sophomores--Alexis Allison, Emily Clark, Jamie Emerick, Emma Kaiser, Lydia Martin, Raeanna Shaulis

Newcomers: Freshmen--Lauryn Calhoun, Alaina Lafferty, Matti McMillan

Strengths: "Our strengths this year consist of very strong leadership in key areas, enthusiasm and a tight-knit team motivated to improve day to day. We have many girls who can play numerous positions, which helps in creating options. We are also fortunate to have a lot of motivated young players that are eager and willing to learn."

Concerns: "We continue to strive for consistency in all areas with our returning letterwinners."

Overall outlook: "I am hoping to see the girls remain tight as a unit as they improve from game to game. They have a lot of potential, and our motto is, and will always be, to be better today than yesterday by keeping our face up."

Assistant coach: Rex Whetstone

Newcomers: Juniors--Camile Shaffer, Elena Rodfong. Sophomores--Kassidy Clark, Lindsey Foor, Kayanna Swartz. Freshmen--Ali Daley, Annie Nave

Strengths: "Last year's team leaders return as senior co-captains Ashley Kovel and Kayla Clark, who give us strong leadership. They seem to mesh well on the court, and it gives the younger girls a great example for what we need to do as a team."

Concerns: "Getting everyone on the same page as soon as possible. Haven't shown consistency yet. Must improve on passing-serve-receive to be competitive."

Returning starters: None

Other returners: Senior--Eden Taddei

Newcomers: Seniors--Alexis Keagy, MacKenzie Reed, Chloe Wyper. Juniors--Mya Burke, Claire Sauerland, Alexis Petre, Rylee Ritko, Lindsay Everett, Olivia DiPangrazio

Strengths: "We have some great senior leaders that have a true vocal presence in our gym. Our determination and grit is very present and will help with the mental game. We have some very dynamic hitters that have club experience and can hit anywhere on the net, which will make us very unpredictable for our opponents. Our serving philosophy and capabilities of our servers will allow us to take risks to be very aggressive, hoping to score us many points and take the other team out of system."

Concerns: "With just one returner with meaningful varsity experience, we will certainly be considered a young team that will have to adapt and adjust to the level of speed of game that playing at the varsity level entails. However, I am encouraged that the girls that may lack some experience at this level will make up with their attitude, effort, discipline and willingness to learn."

Overall outlook: "We have the potential to be a great team. However, we still need to adjust lineups and offensive strategies to have our best six on the court and really click. When we finalize our offensive and defensive system of play and set rotations, I feel we will be able to compete at a high level. I am cautiously optimistic and excited for where this team can be for playoffs."

Strengths: "With seven letterwinners, the girls have experience playing together. Most of them play multiple sports together, so they communicate well. They work hard at practice and are excited to play."
