INDIANAPOLIS -- Leah Shackley came up short on her final day at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium Thursday morning.
The Bedford Area High School graduate competed in the 200 backstroke preliminary race and missed the cut for Thursday night's semifinals. She finished 17th in 2:11.52.
"I won't make excuses but I just didn't feel it (Thursday) morning," Shackley, who trained at the Blair Regional YMCA, said. "The 200 has always been one of my better events, but I could not get out of the funk I was in during warmups, and I missed the semifinals by two tenths of a second."
Shackley had competed in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly earlier in the week and made it to the finals of the 100 backstroke where she placed seventh overall. She came into Thursday's event with an entry time of 2:08.42. The top entry time in her heat was Rhyan White in 2:05.77.
"Overall, we are really happy with Leah's performance," Coach Tom Grassadonia said.
Shackley, who is headed to North Carolina State this fall on a full scholarship, is not done just yet for the summer. She will compete at the Pan Pac Games in Australia.
"When you consider she finished as the No. 1 18U swimmer in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly, and will represent the United States this August (at the Pan Pac Games), and finished seventh overall in the 100 back, we think she had a great meet," Grassadonia said.
