The Altoona Curve chapter of infielder Drew Maggi's storybook season has come to an abrupt end after his release on Monday.
His release was confirmed by organization representatives.
Maggi spent 13 years in the minors culminating in his Major League debut for Pittsburgh on April 26th. He played in two games with the Pirates not registering a hit before being optioned to Altoona.
Mother Nature intervened and forced a double header against Washington on April 29. With Maggi still in town, he was the team's 26th man for the twinbill.
It was in that game where he'd notch the first and only two hits of his career -- so far -- while also scoring a run. The Pirates, after that win, were 20-8 and since have gone 23-48 entering Monday night's contest against San Diego.
Things didn't go much better for Maggi, which ultimately factored in his release. He appeared in 28 games for the Curve after returning from the Pirates and dealt with a suspension, a stint on the Injured List and most recently was placed on the development list July 14.
"Thank you, Pirates fans," Maggi told the PittPost-Gazette. "You're the best in the world. And thank you to the Pirates organization. I'm not done yet!"
In those 96 games, Maggi hit .177 with only five extra base hits in that time period while also striking out 19 times.
In other organization news, the Pirates signed their 18th round draft pick, Kalae Harrison, a shortstop out of North Carolina State. He was assigned to the Florida Complex League. Pittsburgh has signed 20 of its 21 draft picks.
